Overview: 

The Environment, Safety, Health and Quality Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for Senior Radiological Engineer positions within the Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division (NRPD).

The NRPD is seeking a senior technical professional health physicist to provide technical leadership to radiological protection operations groups that support ORNL research and facility operations staff.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

The goal of RPO is to help ensure an appropriate balance between accomplishing the research mission while protecting ORNL staff and the environment from radiological hazards and achieving regulatory/procedure compliance. The Radiological Protection Operations Radiological Engineer will work with the RPO Manager and report to the Group Leader. This position will provide technical leadership and expertise to ensure radiological work performed within their assigned complex is executed effectively and efficiently, while in compliance with ORNL Radiological Protection Program (RPP) requirements, applicable UT-Battelle policies and procedures.

 

Routine responsibilities include:

• Responsible for leading technically complex high-hazard radiological work planning and development of innovative radiological hazard controls.
• Act as radiological protection subject matter expert for planning and design of nuclear and radiological facility modifications as required and perform calculations in support of engineering control cost/benefit decisions.
• Develop or revise technical basis documents, technical evaluations, operational radiological protection procedures, and ALARA Reviews.
• Perform shielding calculations to support shielding design for a wide range of gamma, x-ray, and neutron intensities and energy spectra.
• Periodically perform airflow studies in facilities to ensure optimal placement of Continuous Air Monitoring equipment.
•  Review, evaluate, and approve Radiological Work Permits and determine applicable radiobioassay requirements commensurate with the radiological intake hazards.
•  Routinely interface with senior research and operations leadership staff and Department of Energy ORNL Site Office staff as appropriate.
•  Abide by the principles of Safe Conduct of Research including being personally responsible for ensuring safe operations by raising safety concerns, using a questioning attitude, considering hazards for every task, and never stop learning.
•  Participate in assessments, critiques, incident investigations, and related reviews at ORNL or other Battelle- affiliated Laboratories Develop and present technical briefings to senior research and operations staff
•  Author technical articles for journal publications, provide technical seminars, technical training, etc.
•  Serve on the ORNL Emergency Operations Center support team.
•  May also serve as subject matter expert for glovebox design, air monitoring, ALARA Design, and ALARA programs.
•  Work with NRPD and applicable line management to monitor radiological performance, evaluate data, and develop performance indicators in support of the ORNL Contractor Assurance Program.

 

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor of Science or Engineering degree in Health Physics, engineering, or related technical field.
