Job Summary

The Senior Associate Director, Artificial Intelligence Research drives research across the Center for Applied AI. They are responsible for managing project delivery, supervising staff, forming and nurturing client relationships, and contributing unique insights on research projects and methodologies.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and executes AI/ML project milestones.
  • Contributes unique insights to methodologies, project communication, project support, and research direction.
  • Supervises data scientists, research professionals, and other research support staff.
  • Coordinates with faculty and principal researchers to design and lead AI/ML research projects.
  • Manages hiring and support pipeline for CAAI lab.
  • Presents research insights and metrics to interested stakeholders.
  • Translates research insights to design and communication teams for broad dissemination.
  • Participates in the AI/ML research community at CAAI, Booth, and the University of Chicago.
  • Represents CAAI at external research conferences and other relevant events.
  • Provides expertise to researchers and research support staff. Oversees activities related to data collection and analysis.
  • Improves financial, personnel, planning, compliance and other administrative aspects of research project. Collaborates with other researchers on long-range plans for research projects. Leads, investigates, modifies and applies new procedures, techniques or applications of technology. Establishes goals and operating procedures, practices, and guidelines.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 7+ years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Master’s degree or higher in a quantitative field. Fields considered include computer science, statistics, data science, economics, or something closely related.

Experience:

  • Managing research professionals in an academic environment.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Proficiency with data analysis and machine learning. This includes both theoretical understanding and practical experience with statistical computing using Python or R (the ability to work in both languages).
  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

Preferred Competencies

  • Familiarity with research conventions in economics and computer science fields.
