About the role

About this role:

Wells Fargo is seeking a hands-on leader to drive the transformation of our enterprise platform into a modern, self-service, GitOps-driven ecosystem. As Director of Platform Engineering, you will lead the design and delivery of API-first platform services and microservice-based abstractions that simplify infrastructure complexity and accelerate application delivery across hybrid cloud environments.

This role is ideal for a developer who understands the toil of infrastructure. Someone who has experienced the challenges of deploying and operating applications and is passionate about removing those barriers for others. You’ll build an incremental path from basic automation to full end-to-end self-service, enabling developers to move faster while maintaining operational excellence.

You’ll be hands-on: writing and reviewing code, making architecture decisions, and working directly with partner teams. You’ll also help define and implement core components of our internal developer platform (IDP), including developer portals, service catalogs, golden paths, and observability integrations. By building on top of existing platform abstractions (e.g., OpenShift, Portworx, MongoDB) and cloud abstractions (GCP, Azure), you’ll help create a common control plane that abstracts hybrid cloud complexity and enables seamless application mobility between environments.

Our goal is to accelerate the adoption of cloud-native architectures and modern platforms by reducing complexity and removing barriers. We aim to enable seamless workload portability (stretching, bursting, and consuming cloud services) while empowering teams to use the right tool for the job. Ultimately, we want to make the right thing the easy thing.

In this role, you will:

  • Design and implement API-first platform services and reusable microservice components to abstract infrastructure complexity.
  • Lead the strategy and execution of a scalable, secure, and intuitive internal developer platform.
  • Drive enterprise-wide adoption of GitOps practices and self-service automation.
  • Build an incremental roadmap from rudimentary automation to full end-to-end delivery pipelines.
  • Define and deliver IDP components: developer portal, service catalog, golden paths, CI/CD templates, and observability tooling.
  • Collaborate with platform, security, and application teams to align platform capabilities with business needs.
  • Create a unified control plane to accelerate application onboarding and deployment across environments.
  • Write and review code, make architecture decisions, and guide engineering best practices.

Required Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of Technology Strategic Leadership experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education
  • 4+ years of management or leadership experience
  • 3+ years in platform leadership roles.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Background as a developer who understands infrastructure challenges and developer pain points.
  • Proven success driving platform modernization and developer enablement at scale.
  • Programming & Automation: Proficiency in Python, Go, TypeScript, or Java.
  • API & Microservices: Strong experience designing and building RESTful APIs and microservice architectures.
  • Developer Portals: Experience implementing or contributing to Backstage, Cortex, Port, or similar.
  • Developer Workflows: Deep understanding of CI/CD, service ownership, and cloud-native development.
  • IaC & Config Management: Terraform, Ansible, Puppet, Chef.
  • Image Management: Packer or Image Builder for automated OS image creation.
  • Virtualization: VMware HCX and ESXi for workload migration.
  • Cloud Platforms: Azure, GCP, or AWS for hybrid cloud deployments.
  • Containers & Orchestration: Docker, Kubernetes, PCF.
  • Observability: Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack.
  • GitOps: Git, ArgoCD, Flux for declarative infrastructure and app delivery.
  • API Management: Kong, Apigee.
  • Service Mesh: Istio, Linkerd, or Consul.
  • Strong communicator and collaborator with a product mindset.
  • Passionate about building tools that empower developers and accelerate delivery.
