Job Description

The Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention (BCDP) works to eliminate racial inequities and reduce overall premature mortality by tackling big tobacco, big salt, big sugar, and other commercial determinants of health. As part of prevention and wellness promotion, BCDP employs evidence-based policies, programs, communications, and research to advance its objectives, as well as spearheads and evaluates innovative projects to develop new approaches to addressing chronic disease. The bureau supports work spanning Tobacco Policy and Programs, Healthy Eating Initiatives, Active Design, Public Health Detailing, Cancer Prevention and Control Program, and the Hypertension Initiative. The Bureau sits within the Center for Health Equity and Community Wellness. The Senior Research Analyst will play a critical role in directing BCDP’s portfolio with respect to the social determinants of health (SDH).

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:
- Lead the development and analysis of surveys related to wealth and other social determinants of health (SDH), applying appropriate statistical methodology
- Oversee analytic plans and protocols in conjunction with the Director of R&E, agency leadership, and academic partners


- Author reports and journal articles; synthesize feedback and liaise with reviewers as needed
- Present findings to agency leadership, bureau colleagues, policymakers, and other internal and external stakeholders
- As a content expert for SDH, work in close collaboration with program and policy staff to develop and advance BCDP strategies related to SDH
- Assess the landscape of SDH research (including white papers and peer-reviewed articles) and integrate relevant resources
- Coordinate technical documentation and programs (codebooks, programming syntax, etc.)
- Manage IRB review/approval


PREFERRED SKILLS:
- Advanced degree in epidemiology, statistics, health economics, sociology, public health, public policy, or related fields
- Proven ability to lead research projects and manuscript development
- Strong analytic and statistical software (SAS, SQL, other) skills
- Facility with data management
- Excellent data visualization and communication skills (both verbal and written)
- Experience designing survey instruments and/or program evaluation plans
- Expertise with peer-reviewed literature on social determinants of health, including wealth, food insecurity and financial incentives, in addition to chronic disease prevention, health equity, and strategies to eliminate racial/ethnic inequities in health outcomes
- Ability to work independently and exercise a high degree of initiative to accomplish tasks and solve problems
