Legal Staffing Manager
(Full-time, California, Hybrid or Remote)
Fisher Phillips, a premier international labor and employment law firm, is seeking an experienced Legal Staffing Manager to manage the strategic and efficient allocation of associate/counsel resources across the firm’s California offices and jurisdictions. This role is responsible for staffing cases across a range of labor and employment matters while also ensuring workload equity, responsiveness, and alignment with professional development goals.
The successful candidate will have experience managing large portfolios of work, working with a diverse group of attorneys in a large litigation law firm, and the ability to develop strong working relationships and credibility with firm management, leaders, attorneys, and committees across the firm.
This position can be performed on a fully remote or hybrid basis from any of the firm’s California offices and reports to the Director of Legal Project Management. Occasional travel to the California practice offices is expected.
Key Responsibilities
Working primarily with the Regional Manager Partners in California, the Director of Legal Project Management, the Chief Legal Operations Officer, and the Director of Professional Development, this individual will develop, implement, and oversee a streamlined process for the assignment of California-based legal work to associates/counsel, including, but not limited to, the following responsibilities:
Matter Staffing:
- Manage and facilitate associate/counsel staffing for California employment law matters as assigned, including administrative charges, demand letters, and various types of litigation.
- Develop an understanding of the California associates’ and counsels’ skills, legal experience, areas of specialization, client/industry experience, and availability, and match those to new matters to ensure the best fits.
- Identify and manage evolving technological solutions for matter staffing, including matter management software tools.
- Partner with the California’s Regional Managing Partners (or their designees) and originating partners to understand and follow case staffing preferences and client expectations.
- Communicate effectively and proactively with the California partners and Virtual Office management to understand ongoing staffing needs.
- Provide restaffing assistance and project management support to California offices when attorneys depart or take leaves of absence and work needs to be reassigned.
- Partner with the firm’s Virtual Office and collaborate on the best staffing options for California work to include associates in practice offices and Virtual Office Counsel and Special Counsel.
Associate/Counsel Development & Integration:
- Track individual California attorney experience and specialization (e.g., ADA/FEHA, leave laws, arbitration), and development goals to inform staffing decisions.
