Program Director of MS in Genetic Counseling (MSGC)

Description

The Program Director will be the lead administrator for the MS in Genetic Counseling (MSGC) program with the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (URSMD). The MSGC program is a newly developed program that will be offered through URSMD and housed in the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) Department of Pediatrics. This MSGC program has been approved by the URSMD Committee on Graduate Studies (CGS) and was approved by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) in January of 2022.

The Program Director’s primary responsibilities upon hire include continuing to shape the Program's vision, goals, strategic plan, and curriculum; ensuring that the Program is compliant with Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC) standards; developing and maintaining the Program budget with ongoing collaboration with administrators regarding such; develop and execute a plan to recruit, interview, admit, and retain students (planned participation of the Program in application cycle that begins Fall of 2022); and other duties required for successful Program implementation. Additional job duties are also outlined below.

Job Duties Outlined:
-Serve as the lead administrator for the MSGC Program year-round.

-Maintain Program compliance with ACGC standards; serve as the primary contact for communication with the accrediting body regarding standards compliance and programmatic changes.

-Develop, review, and revise the Program’s strategic plan, including mission, vision, goals, and philosophy.

-Develop and maintain budgets for the Program. Prepare budget requests and effectively use allocated funds to benefit the Program. Prepare and submit reports as necessary to meet administrative and accreditation requirements. Engage in long-term planning to ensure the Program’s fiscal stability.

-Develop, review, and oversee the Program admissions process.

-Coordinate, monitor, and evaluate all personnel in activities directly related to the Program. This includes but is not limited to, evaluation of faculty and staff performance.

-Determine faculty needs and recruit faculty for the Program as necessary.

-Maintain and collaborate with the Program advisory board and implement appropriate recommendations.

-Evaluate and revise as necessary the Program’s plan to create and foster diversity and inclusivity within the Program, including Program leadership, faculty, staff, and student body.

-Develop partnerships and collaborate with other UR Program Leaders, faculty and staff, relevant members of contributing departments, regional institutions, and community organizations in activities directly related to the Program.

-Develop, implement, and continuously evaluate the Program, including all curricular requirements.

-Provide academic advising and monitor, evaluate, and remediate student performance.

-Serve as course director and/or provide teaching as necessary for the Program.

-Oversee master’s research projects for Program students.

-Oversee coordination of clinical fieldwork placements for Program students, assisting the Associate Program Director (APD) as needed in their duties as primary Fieldwork Coordinator.

-Establish and maintain affiliation agreements for clinical fieldwork placements of Program students as necessary.

 

-Other special projects and duties as required for the Program.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

• Must meet all qualifications for the Program Director role as outlined in the ACGC standards, including:
• Hold a master’s degree in the discipline of genetic counseling
• Have current certification in genetic counseling by the ABGC or the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG); Recertify with ABGC as needed to maintain certification
• Have at least five years of experience as a certified genetic counselor, a minimum of three of which must be in a patient-facing role (clinic or research)
• Have been the course instructor/instructor of record for at least six credit hours of post-secondary education
• Complete two hours per year of continuing training/coursework in curriculum design, assessment, evaluation, or educational andragogy; individuals becoming a program director for the first time must have completed at least 10 hours of training/coursework in curriculum design, assessment, evaluation, or educational andragogy, within the last ten years
