Position Overview

 

This position is responsible for the direct supervision of a staff of Resident Engineers engaged in the construction supervision and inspection of highway construction projects in an assigned geographical area within the district. 

Essential Functions

  • Ensures construction projects are built according to plans, specifications and departmental policies and with an acceptable engineering cost.
  • Ensures complete and accurate documentation to facilitate timely acceptance and finalization of projects.
  • Ensures timely response to inquiries, complaints, request and follow-up action.
  • Establishes mutual cooperation between the Bureau of Construction and other central and district bureaus to reconcile divergent viewpoints on special construction problems.
  • Trains and motivates subordinate personnel to ensure a well-developed and competent staff.
  • Performs all duties in a safe manner and ensure that all subordinates perform their work assignments in compliance with the Illinois Department of Transportation Safety Code.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules.  Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois.
  • Five years of experience in civil engineering.
     

Preferred Qualifications

  • Supervisory experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering.
  • Extensive knowledge of the modern methods and practices of public works construction and maintenance operations.
  • Ability to promote, establish, and maintain harmonious relationships with staff and the public.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
