Visiting Assistant Professor of Theatre (Theatre-making, Theatre Studies)

The Denison University Department of Theatre and Dance invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor of Theatre position beginning in the Fall of 2026.  

The Visiting Assistant Professor will teach three courses in the Fall 2026 semester: 

 

• Theatre 200 “Intermediate Theatre-making,” an introductory course in directing and theatre-making for majors and minors; and

• two sections of THTR 270, "Elements of Dramatic Art," an introductory-level course in theatre studies, with some great flexibility in focus and assignments.

 

In the Spring 2027 semester, we anticipate this colleague teaching:

 

• Two sections of W101, the First-Year Writing Workshop, a required course for all First-Year students at the college, in which students practice formulating and presenting arguments in cogent essays, evaluate and incorporate research into their writing, and assess their own work and that of their peers; and

• an advanced course in the candidate’s field of expertise. 

 

The Denison program in Theatre has seven FT faculty positions and two FT teaching staff artists.  The faculty and students collaborate with the artistic and administrative staff of Denison’s Eisner Center for the Performing Arts.  The department typically has 40-50 majors and minors and produces or contributes to the production of six mainstage theatre projects each year (including the Music Theatre area).  We offer a multidisciplinary B.A. major in Theatre, a minor in Theatre, and a minor in Music Theatre.

Qualifications

• A terminal degree (typically the M.F.A. or Ph.D. in Theatre or a related field) by the start date is required.  

• Prior experience teaching undergraduate college students in directing and/or theatre-making.

• Prior experience teaching undergraduate college students in a first-year (or early-career student) course in academic writing and theatre studies.
