Roles & Responsibilities: 

The Walker Lab at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is looking for an individual with a strong background in nutrition and exercise physiology who is interested in both research and clinical work to fill an immediately available full-time position. This is a unique position in which there is no “typical day” and the candidate will be involved in a wide variety of projects. 

Position Description:

As a Clinical Research Coordinator you will assist with a cutting-edge NIH-funded study, led by Dr. Ryan Walker, taking place at the Human Metabolism and Physiology Lab (HMPL) at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, NY. The study investigates the role of excess dietary fructose consumption on the human gut microbiome and cardiometabolic disease risk. The project involves a complex and unique clinical dietary protocol offering the candidate an opportunity to become fully immersed within the clinical research process, from participant screening and enrollment to manuscript publication. Opportunities to learn about and work with a wide range of multi-omics data will likely exist. Involvement in additional NIH-funded studies is likely.

The candidate may have the potential to split time between research and clinical activities and contribute effort to the Mount Sinai Physiolab team. As a coordinator in the Mount Sinai Physiolab, you will also grow your clinical practice through running and analyzing body composition, metabolic, exercise and dietary assessments, including nutrition and lifestyle counseling using the gold-standard equipment and resources within the lab. We view the Mount Sinai Physiolab as a small start-up, with huge potential for growth and impact in the field of personalized and preventive medicine. The candidate is expected to lead growth activities and assist in promoting the Physiolab in the NY area.

The Clinical Research Coordinator assists in the daily activities of clinical research studies, obtains informed consent; collects, maintains and organizes study information. Assists in preparing grant applications and documents (for e.g., Institutional Review Board, Grants and Contracts Office).

  • Monitor all aspects of clinical research trial including, but not limited to:
    • Conducting literature reviews
    • Review and develop a familiarity with the protocol(s)
    • Participant screening
    • Scheduling and participant relations
    • Preparing and completing critical study documents
    • Equipment/supplies/document management and organization
    • Collecting and analyzing data
    • Transferring/processing/storing of specimens 
    • Coordinate and assist with participant testing and procedures
    • Management of day-to-day study activities including problem solving, communication, protocol management
    • Assist PI and Co-I’s in preparation of IRB and other regulatory submission documents/modifications
    • Assist with data analysis and manuscript development
    • Present research at conferences, grand rounds, etc. 
  • Perform body composition assessment using BodPod technology
  • Perform resting metabolic assessment using metabolic cart and metabolic chamber technologies
  • Perform exercise metabolic assessment (FatMax, Submax, VO2max testing) using metabolic cart and metabolic chamber technologies
  • Engage in individual nutrition and lifestyle counseling with clients where appropriate (including corporate, “weekend warriors”, elite athletes and  weight loss clients) 
  • Assist in management of student volunteers
  • Client relation, follow-up, scheduling
  • Social media, blog post, educational material development 
  • Marketing, business analytics 
  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Science or closely related field.
  • 1-2 years of research experience
  • Preferred: Strong background in nutrition, exercise science, physiology, or related field and academic and/or work experience in clinical research 
  • Highly preferred: CDR-credentialed Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian-Nutritionist (RDN) and American College of Sports Medicine Certified Exercise Physiologist (EP-C) highly preferred
