Job Description

The PCT Phlebotomist reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

A clinically competent technician who works under the supervision of the RN in delivering skilled and effective care and all related functions. Provides direct and indirect patient care in the Interventional Lab holding room setting and assists in maintenance of a safe and clean environment under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse. Utilizes initiative and strives to maintain an steady level of productivity. Promotes efficient progression of patients through the holding room area. Reinforces teaching previously taught by RN.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs basic patient care responsibilities, including taking vital signs, skin care, and personal care considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient's age.
  • Answers call lights promptly, in a timely manner.
  • Collects and labels specimens (urine, stool and sputum) accurately and according to policy. Identifies and transports blood/blood components and specimens using appropriate blood borne pathogen precautions. Identifies drains and tubes, empties and records drainage.
  • Follows standard precautions and CDH infection control policies and procedures consistently.
  • Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly, cleans equipment according to standards. Performs equipment QA and maintenance.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Protects the patients in the event of a medical/health care error and, as appropriate, assists in medical/health care error resolution.
  • Performs other duties as assigned with PCT scope of practice.
  • Assists with patient admission, orients patient and family to the room, assists patients with ambulation/positioning, prepares patients for discharge/transfer, and transports patients as needed.
  • Performs routine procedures including: phlebotomy, specimen collection / handling, glucometer testing and 12 lead EKG.
  • Performs all aspects of holding room patient care under the supervision of the RN. Duties include but are not limited to: compilation of patient's medical record, pre-procedural testing, patient preparation, transportation, vital sign monitoring and patient ambulation.
  • Demonstrates support and awareness of daily schedule by expediting on-time starts and efficient progression of patients through the invasive lab holding area.
  • Demonstrates ability to promptly communicate to the RN any observed changes in patient status and responses; e.g. pain, changes in condition, distress. Clarifies with the RN any special procedures or observations necessary.
  • Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care under the direction of the RN.
