About the role

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

About The Role:

The New York Times is a technology company committed to producing the world’s most reliable and highest quality journalism. Our ability to do so relies on a talented team of expert technologists who help NYT learn from a tremendous abundance of data unique to this company.

The Algorithmic Recommendations team (Algo Recs) aims to help users discover content across the Times' website, apps and emails by applying algorithms that make use of information about our readers' behavior and our editorial judgment. We are a group of data scientists and data analysts that partner with teams across The New York Times. We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist to join the Data Science Group and apply machine learning methods to meet this challenge. You will report to the lead of the Algo Recs team, and collaborate with partners across the company. This is a hybrid role based in the New York office.

Responsibilities:

  • You will reframe team goals as machine learning tasks that deliver accurate predictions, relevant insights, and optimization
  • You will turn models into data products, collaborate with engineering teams, and integrate into processes throughout The Times
  • You will collaborate with end-users of data products and respond to partner needs
  • You will demonstrate technical and team leadership in machine learning projects
  • You will mentor junior data scientists through pairing and algorithm, model, and code review
  • You will implement and deploy machine learning research with robustness and reproducibility, with consideration of risks and trade-offs
  • You will present and discuss data science work with colleagues and project sponsors, including company leadership

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD plus 2+ years experience, or 5+ years experience, in statistics, computer science, applied mathematics, computational social science, or another quantitative/computational discipline
  • 3+ years of experience developing and deploying complex Machine Learning models that are integrated into company process
  • 3+ years of experience in creatively reframing questions as Machine Learning tasks
  • 3+ years of experience with data cleaning, preparation, feature engineering, and model selection techniques
  • Experience coding in production environments using Python and SQL

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1+ years of experience with recommendation systems and NLP methods and reinforcement learning
  • 1+ years of experience collaborating with other data scientists, analysts, software developers, and Machine Learning engineers
  • 1+ years of experience scoping and staging projects into well-defined milestones and delivering on communicated timelines

If you see a job opening here that might be a good fit for you, we encourage you to apply. We offer a comprehensive and competitive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision plans for employees and their families, health and wellness programs, a 401(k) plan, tuition reimbursement, paid vacation, paid parental leave, and much more.
