This Opportunity

WSP is seeking a junior-level Substation Physical Engineer to join our team supporting our Client in their Rochester, NY office.  WSP has a highly experienced and dynamic team of individuals dedicated to providing high-level professional services to our clients. 

Your Impact

  • Responsible for physical design for utility scale substations for power delivery, solar, and wind applications. Voltages include 12 kV through 345 kV.
  • Prepares reports, specifications and drawing packages.
  • Review and approves project submittals, RFIs and supports field activities during construction.
  • Provide professional and technical support to multiple WSP projects.
  • Day-to-day support and input to internal and external Project Managers.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited college.
  • 1+ years of relevant post education experience 
  • Working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, etc.) is required
  • Effective verbal communication and technical writing skills.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail and check the quality of own and others’ work.
  • Ability to manage time and workload effectively, which includes planning, organizing and prioritizing with attention to details.
  • Familiar with applicable codes and standards (IEEE, ANSI, NESC).
  • Analytical mindset with an ability to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions. 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements (<20%)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • EIT/FE certification or the ability to obtain certification within one year is preferred.
  • Experience developing general arrangements, section views, plan views, and associated BOM preferred.
  • Experience completing AC and DC load, voltage drop, and conduit fill calculations preferred. 
  • Experience developing equipment and construction specifications a plus.
  • Experience with electrical software applications including ASPEN, ETAP, PSCAD, CDEGS
  • AutoCAD and MicroStation drafting experience a plus.

Compensation: 

Expected Salary (all locations): $65,000 - $85,000

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and may offer additional benefits and compensation, depending on circumstances and the type of work being performed not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
