What You’ll Do
Within the Denver Department of Public Health & Environment (DDPHE), Denver Animal Protection (DAP) protects the safety and welfare of Denver’s animals and residents by fostering the human animal bond. DAP emphasizes public and animal safety and health, encourages responsible pet ownership through education and enforcing compliance with animal-related municipal code requirements, and cares for animals at the Denver Animal Shelter (DAS). DAP has an opening for a Field Services Administrator. This position will perform specialized and/or technical office support work, including taking investigative reports related to dog/cat bites, creating and managing a proactive bite prevention program, serving as liaison between Denver Animal Protection and Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment as well as DDPHE Epidemiologists for rabies concerns, and data entry/tracking for agency ticketing. In addition, this position will triage lower priority calls for Animal Protection Officer response and manage Denver Animal Protection’s Permit Program. The permit program encompasses Potentially Dangerous Animal Permits, Intact Animal Permits, Livestock and Fowl Permits, and Breed Restricted Permits.
Specifically, the Field Services Administrator will:
Interview bite victims and begin investigative bite reports.
Know and be able to explain Animal Protection ordinances to victims and pet owners involving animal attacks and bites.
Articulate options to victims for criminal prosecution and/or restitution.
Identify severity of bites and schedule appropriate follow up actions for field officers.
Maintain timely and accurate records and files according to established procedures.
Track and report bite incident statistics.
Coordinate zoonotic disease control responses for Denver Animal Protection.
Management of Field Services Humane Education Program.
Budget management and oversight related to Humane Education as well as Field Services supplies needs.
Call queue management and interfacing with the 311 call center.
Prepare, schedule, and ensure prompt delivery to state lab of rabies testing specimens, coordinate with state lab and diagnostic labs to get results.
Prepare, catalogue, and disseminate information for forensic necropsies to shelter veterinary staff as well as Animal Protection Officers.
Entry and management of criminal cases as well as administrative violations.
Liaison with City Attorney's office related to plea agreements, dispositions, and criminal case management.
Management of Intact Animal Permits, Potentially Dangerous Animal Permits, and Livestock or Fowl Permits, and Breed Restricted Permits.
Management of barking dog communications with the city's mediation partner.
Agency point of contact for Colorado Open Records Act requests, particularly related to investigations.
Intake of investigations through 311 call center, Colorado Humane Society, CrimeStoppers, and Bureau of Animal Protection.
Testify in court as needed.
