The Line Cook at Hygea Healthcare is responsible for preparing and cooking meals that meet the nutritional needs and dietary requirements of patients, staff, and visitors. Working in a healthcare or behavioral health facility, the Line Cook must maintain high standards of food safety, sanitation, and quality while adhering to specific dietary guidelines for various patient populations.
Essential Job Functions
- Prepare, cook, and plate meals according to facility-approved recipes, ensuring proper portion control and presentation.
- Follow dietary guidelines and restrictions (e.g., low sodium, diabetic, gluten-free, etc.) for patients as prescribed by healthcare professionals.
- Ensure all meals are prepared and served at appropriate temperatures and in a timely manner.
- Adhere to all food safety regulations, including the safe handling of food and proper storage of ingredients.
- Maintain a clean and organized workstation, following sanitation protocols to ensure a hygienic kitchen environment.
- Ensure all food items are properly labeled, dated, and rotated using the first-in, first-out (FIFO) method.
- Work collaboratively with the kitchen staff, dietitians, and healthcare professionals to meet patients' dietary needs.
- Communicate any food shortages, substitutions, or equipment issues to the Kitchen Manager or Executive Chef.
- Assist with menu planning and special dietary requests as needed.
- Assist in monitoring inventory levels and alert the supervisor when ingredients or supplies need to be replenished.
- Ensure proper use and maintenance of kitchen equipment, reporting any malfunctions or safety concerns promptly.
- Assist in the preparation of meals for special events or functions hosted by the facility.
- Support other kitchen staff as needed, including dishwashing, cleaning, and basic food prep tasks.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of a culinary program or equivalent work experience preferred.
- Previous experience as a line cook, preferably in a healthcare or institutional setting, is a plus.
- Strong knowledge of food preparation, cooking techniques, and safety protocols.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with kitchen staff and healthcare professionals.
