The Role
Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.
This position is for Nuclear Engineering department E86 for the Ford Class Carrier (CVN), Virginia Class (VCS) and Columbia Class (CLB) programs. Specifically, this position is hands-on waterfront engineering support and oversight on Reactor Plant and Propulsion Plant Systems with a mechnical and/or structural background on 2nd shift.
A successful candidate should possess analytical and problem solving skills to resolve technical issues which arise during construction. The individual should have the communication and relational skills to interface and discuss technical issues with technical and non-technical personnel as well as government representatives, customers and vendors. In addition, the candidate should be willing to actively work on the waterfront to support onsite inspections of problems and provide support to trades during construction.
Typical duties in this role include the following:
1. Act as lead/backup for multiple components or areas of focus.
2. Performing onsite inspections of construction issues that arise during construction in support of resolving Technical Work Documents (eIRs, ERs, etc).
3. Support material issue resolution through answering of QNs, VIRs, VQs.
4. Using technical writing skills to develop, review and approve technical work instruction/procedures (SCNIs, SCNPs, CCPIs, CCPPs).
5. Aid in development of junior engineers by providing insight on system operations, typical deckplate problem solving and other engineering processes.
6. Support production meetings on behalf of engineering in order to support timely resolutions and provide engineering insight on construction issues.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master’s Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Effective written and verbal communication skills; Problem Solving; Critical Thinking; Technical Writing. Experience with Microsoft Office Programs and various NNS shipbuilding programs (i.e. DDMS, SAP, i2, etc.)
Nice to Have
- A comprehensive understanding of reactor plant and/or non-nuclear steam plant fluid systems and components, reactor plant and/or steam plant cleanliness, system test processes in a construction environment and experience with ship construction processes
- Awareness of lifting and handling requirements is a plus
- Experience with the procurement process and vendor liabilities (i.e. VIRs, VQs and QNs) is highly desirable. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required
- Ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams of personnel with varying backgrounds and experience levels
