About the role
Job Purpose and FunctionThe essential function of the Tax Staff Accountant is the preparation and filing of tax forms and payment of tax obligations for the Company, including the reconciliation of tax-related general ledger accounts. This position prepares petroleum and sales & use tax returns for multiple jurisdictions and manages payments for business licenses and real estate taxes. This role will support external tax and financial audits and focus on identifying and implementing improvements in key business processes.How You’ll Make an Impact
- Prepare and record monthly tax-related journal entries to support accurate financial reporting.
- Prepare and file tax returns in compliance with local and state regulations and deadlines; includes sales and use tax, gross receipts, motor fuel excise, bag, and meals tax.
- Reconcile tax-related general ledger accounts and investigate and resolve discrepancies.
- Coordinate and lead tax audits by gathering data, preparing schedules, and responding to inquiries.
- Process annual real estate tax payments, record monthly entries, and maintain account reconciliations in compliance with U.S. GAAP.
- Develop annual budget estimates for real estate tax and business license fee expenses.
- Review local and state business license applications and annual renewals, ensuring compliance with all applicable jurisdictions.
- Prepare motor fuel license applications/annual renewals and related bond documentation.
- Maintain tax exemption certificates and support documentation.
- Monitor changes in tax laws and assess potential impact on the business.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure accurate and compliant tax application, assisting with special projects and ad hoc tax analyses as needed.
- Support, maintain, and recommend tax automation tools, system updates, and process improvements.
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field; alternatively, a minimum of 3 years of general ledger and additional progressive tax accounting experience will be considered in the absence of an undergraduate degree.
- A minimum of 3 years of progressive broad-based accounting experience in a private, corporate environment
- Exceptional research, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Advanced proficiency in Excel and financial management
- Strong technical accounting knowledge with a detail-oriented approach

- Service-oriented with a commitment to accuracy and efficiency
- Authorization to work in the U.S. (visa sponsorship or C2C opportunities not available at this time).
- Willing to submit to a pre-employment background check, credit check in accordance with local, state, and federal laws.
- Broad-based accounting experience in a retail environment
- Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system experience; PDI preferred.
