The Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus—an academic medical center with Magnet designation in Northern Virginia—is a proud recipient of the AACN Silver Beacon Award and has earned national recognition for excellence.
We are seeking an RN Fellow to join our team. This is for an experienced RN who requires training in the CICU. We will provide the Critical Care Fellowship.
Shifts: 3 x 12-hour shifts –Day/Night rotation.
CICU is a fast-paced cardiac critical care environment that strongly emphasizes teamwork, excellent patient care, and providing a variety of learning opportunities to support the professional growth of our team. Our high-performing nursing team collaborates closely with extensively trained medical colleagues, including a Cardiac Intensivist, Medical Intensivists, Interventionalists, and Cardiologists rotating as CICU attending, Cardiology Fellows, and Advanced Practice Providers.
Our specialty population includes but is not limited to:
• Unstable STEMI management and post PCI/PTCA recovery, serving as STEMI response for the campus
• Complex cardiac arrest and cardiogenic shock management, including therapeutic hypothermia, CRRT, VV and VA ECMO, Impella, and IABP therapies.
• Complex medical and mechanical circulatory support management of pre-heart and pre-lung transplant patient populations prior to surgery.
• Complex advanced heart failure management, including LVAD.
• Complex unstable arrhythmia management, including care of complicated laser-assisted lead removal for PPM/AICD replacement and transvenous pacemakers
• Advanced pulmonary hypertension therapies, including Intravenous Prostacyclin therapy.

• Cardiac Critical Care Education focusing on management of complex cardiovascular conditions; training, and learning support through didactic days, simulations, educational symposiums, and attendance in regional (Heart Failure, Cardiogenic Shock) and national conferences (NTI, Magnet Conferences)
• A strong emphasis on professional development through Nursing Certification (CCRN & CMC) and the ADVANCE (Clinical Ladder) program.
• Dedicated CICU Clinical Educator and Mentor who facilitates onboarding, orientation, education and training, competency validation, professional development (e.g., nursing certification & ADVANCE clinical ladder application).

Appropriate Staffing and Resources
• Experienced charge nurses and resource nurses are out of staffing 24/7, leading unit operations and quality initiatives, ensuring optimal patient care and safety.
• Proficient Resource Nurses provide team support and education on high-acuity patients with advanced therapy modalities, assisting with admissions, transfers, and covering breaks.
• Acuity-based staffing model, wherein nursing, level of care, and patient needs are matched with the knowledge, skills, and competencies of a Cardiac Critical Care RN, ensuring safe, reliable patient care and nurse well-being.
• Clinical technicians provide nursing and phlebotomy support.
Leadership and Interdisciplinary collaboration
• A highly engaged core leadership team including nursing, medical, APP, and pharmacy leaders who are invested in patient care, the growth of the program, and the success of the team
• Medical direction by a highly skilled Cardiac Critical Care Intensivist & Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiologist in collaboration with the Fellowship Program Director. A successful Cardiology Fellow program that supports a model of 24-hour cardiology availability.
• Robust multidisciplinary rounding structure consisting of RNs, MDs, APPs, Fellows, Residents, Pharmacists, Social Worker/Case Manager (Ethics and Patient Experience Specialists available onsite as well).
