Job Overview

The Electrical Department Foreperson supports the University electrical maintenance team’s operations by functioning as a working foreperson in responsibilities that include but are not limited to:

  • Oversees and participates in construction, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of electrical systems and electrical components of HVAC, Plumbing and other systems. Interprets blueprints, specifications, details, instructions, etc., and works alongside team members to complete tasks
  • Plans and schedules work based on individual skill levels and project needs
  • Provides input to the Supervisor on employee performance and conduct
  • Understands and follows industry safety practices while performing daily tasks
  • Maintains a good general knowledge of building mechanical/electrical/plumbing system operations and use of industry standard tools and test equipment
  • Maintains the knowledge and skills required to troubleshoot and repair residential/industrial/commercial level electrical systems and electrical components of HVAC, plumbing and other systems
  • Works independently to assess and diagnose system concerns and to develop a repair project scope, which can include collaboration with other trades, contractors, vendors, University departments and stakeholders
  • Orders parts, tools and supplies from various vendors, verifies orders on arrival, prepares estimates/cost sheets for projects, and assists with budget planning.
  • Trains new low voltage shop employees
  • Performs other related duties incidental to the work described above

Work Interactions

Reporting directly to the Supervisor of the Low Voltage Department, and working within the Facility Operations Division, the Electrical Department Foreperson provides a direct service to the department, ensuring a comfortable, safe and clean environment in which the University community can live, learn and work.

They work primarily with employees in the Facilities Management area, and interact with students, faculty, staff and visitors as they traverse the campus; and work cooperatively

with fellow employees and building occupants to assure work is completed on time and according to specified plans.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalency
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience of continual electrical shop leadership
  • Written proof of completion of an approved four-year electrical apprenticeship program or equivalent training and 8000 hour of work experience in the electrical trade
  • Ability able to train new low voltage shop employees
  • Proficiency with computers for generating spreadsheets, parts ordering, reading blueprints, and other related tasks
  • Experience with meeting vendors and contractors for scoping out work, requesting proposals and scheduling the work.
  • Experience with CMMS programs for tracking work order completion, running reports for aging work orders, and working with the supervisor on planning work order assignments for shop.
  • Strong leadership skills with a strong history of planning and managing work
  • Possession of a valid driver license to drive a university vehicle and post-hire, qualify to become a university authorized driver
