The Administrative Nurse Supervisor is a valuable resource for nursing and non-nursing staff across the hospital. They possess the authority to make critical decisions in nursing practice in accordance with the Nursing Practice Act of Massachusetts, following established policies at the unit, department, and hospital levels. In emergency situations, they have the power to make broader decisions and collaborate with the Administrator-On-Call (AOC), even accessing additional resources as needed.
This role is dedicated to ensuring high-quality and safe patient care, with a focus on achieving zero patient harm. They actively monitor and promote best practices aligned with national patient safety goals and the Patient Care Services (PCS) initiatives at BMC, emphasizing safe care transitions, nursing-sensitive indicators, and positive patient and family experiences.
Additionally, the Administrative Nurse Supervisor collaborates with the Central Staffing Office (CSO) and Flow Coordinator to both efficiently allocate nursing and ancillary resources during assigned shifts and facilitate the efficient flow of patients through the hospital. They assume accountability for supervising nursing personnel, addressing staffing needs, and intervening in critical staffing situations. They also assess staffing matrixes, provide operational analysis, and offer recommendations for improved efficiency.
In the absence of department leadership, the Administrative Nurse Supervisor takes on an expanded role as the on-site administrator, responsible for interpreting and enforcing system policies for nursing staff and other stakeholders. They act as a liaison between clinical staff, other departments, physicians, families, and community resources, addressing campus crisis situations and taking necessary actions for correction, prevention, or escalation. 1. Provides leadership so that patient care staffing is optimal by providing complementary resources that deliver high-quality, effective, and efficient patient care. Identifies and escalates system issues that interfere with the achievement of patient, unit, departmental, and institutional goals. Supports the ongoing development of staff through coaching, mentoring, and role modeling. Initiates and manages change, ensuring appropriate support and resources to staff. Seeks opportunities to build working alliances with other professional groups. Demonstrates skill in identifying and managing conflict. Seeks guidance for appropriate resources in departmental goals.
2. Facilitates implementation of the nursing process by providing support and direction and by acting as the clinical and administrative resource person. In emergency situations assumes operational administrative authority.
3. Encourages and supports diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and creates and maintains an environment of professionalism, respect, tolerance, civility, and acceptance toward all employees, patients, and visitors.
4. Oversees and coordinates the work of nursing personnel in the absence of the responsible nurse manager or clinical director. Assigns/reassigns nursing personnel in all areas of nursing according to patient acuity/staffing changes. Anticipates patient care needs on the following shifts and appropriately meets those needs. Directs nursing staff to appropriate resource personnel for the management of patient care problems.
5. Interprets and clarifies medical center policies for all staff. Serves as a liaison between nursing staff and other departments, physicians, families, and community resources. Investigate crisis situations on assigned units and follow up with appropriate action for correction and/or prevention.
6. Ensures that hospital staff complies with hospital policies, quality assurance programs, safety, and infection control policies and procedures.
7. In collaboration with CSO, deploys flex team and behavioral resource technicians. Determines and implements redeployment of staff to ensure appropriate coverage for all units.
8. Identifies intra/interdepartmental problems and works with appropriate managers to resolve them.
