About the role

Betterment’s Controller team is responsible for analyzing and reporting on the financial health of our Business. We’re looking for someone who is excited to immerse themselves in the day-to-day operations of our organization and lead a team of experienced professionals. This role will play a critical role in a tight-knit finance team that is an integral part of the organization.

This role is based out of our NYC office. Below we've reflected the base salary range we would offer for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Betterment’s total compensation package for employees. 

  • New York City: $95,000 - $105,000

This job may also be eligible for variable compensation in the form of a company incentive bonus.  For jobs based out of our NYC HQ, we require in office attendance Tuesday through Thursday, weekly.

A day in the life

  • Lead and manage the accounts payable, accounts receivable, and employee travel and entertainment functions.
  • Mentor and coach new and existing accounting operations staff.
  • Be a key stakeholder in the cross-functional management of the procure-to-pay and order-to-cash processes.
  • Assist with daily banking requirements. Monitor and forecast cash position.
  • Implement and enforce proper accounting policies, procedures, and controls.
  • Support the month-end accounting close process. 
  • Partner with departmental leaders, working directly with them to translate requests into actionable recommendations.
  • Actively identify issues and implement process and system improvements, contributing to a collaborative and high-performance work environment.
  • Establish and maintain key metrics and performance indicators to measure the health and efficiency of collections and payment processes.  
  • Assist with other Controller team duties and ad-hoc requests.

What we’re looking for

  • Working knowledge of accounting operations and generally accepted accounting principles. 
  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant work experience and/or degree in Finance, Accounting, or other applicable field.
  • Proficient with Excel.
  • Experience with Netsuite preferred.
  • Experience with other financial software such as Zip, Ramp, Stripe, and Salesforce preferred 
  • Experience managing a remote team is preferred, but not required.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment.
