About the role

Job Description:

The temporary Technical Director, Zack Box (TD) at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee (BCB) serves as technical director for assigned productions, music events, theater rentals, orientation and special events at on-campus and off-campus venues. This position primarily provides production support to productions and events taking place in the Zack Box Theater, a 55-seat black box theater and classroom space. The TD also provides support to events taking place on the Mainstage and select other performance venues on and off campus.

As part of the Performance Services department, the TD reports to the Assistant Director of Production,
collaborates closely with the Technical Direction team, Stage Managers and the full production team. The TD coordinates, trains and supervises the overhire workforce and student workers necessary to ensure successful productions. The TD also oversees budgets and scheduling as related to the Zack Box. This is a temporary, full-time, exempt position that is anticipated to work through the end of the Spring 2025 semester (early May).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

● Ensure all phases of each production are thoroughly planned, organized, effectively executed, in line with artistic goals and overall production schedule and budget, initiating corrective action when necessary

● Oversee all scenic needs and work calls throughout the full production process

● Prepare and disseminate scenic and technical information and changes, including costs, at production meetings and to all production stakeholders.

● Maintain and coordinate for the safety, accessibility, and functionality of department facilities and equipment

● Create and disseminate ground plan and section drawings, along with other technical drawings as needed

● Collaborate closely with the full Department to provide staffing and supervision for any venue use outside of BCB productions

● Coordinate on scheduling stage time, technical rehearsals, and coverage in the Zack Box

● Install video equipment for productions as needed, upload video elements for productions, and perform minor cue work for video during tech

● Hire, train, schedule and supervise student workers in the Zack Box, including student production assistants and stage managers.

● Provide technical guidance to student projects, including support for scenic, lighting, and sound elements in the Zack Box. Projects include, but are not limited to: senior directing productions, capstone projects, ensemble performance laboratory, and other curricular needs.

● Coordinate with Box Office and Front of House teams for public performances, including staffing, capacity, specific show details such as length and audience advisories, to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all audience members.

● Support for other events in the Zack Box as needed

● Serves as Manager on Duty for select small-scale projects as assigned by the Assistant Director of Production.

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

● Bachelor’s degree in Theater or similar field, or equivalent work experience

● At least four years of experience as a professional Technical Director required

● Experience working with college students in an advisory, supervisory, and/or educational capacity preferred

● Experience with other areas of technical theater, such as lighting, audio, costumes, stage management, projections, and/or stage management preferred.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

● Advanced experience in scenic construction and rigging

● Advanced ability to read and produce draftings/ construction drawings ● Strong ability to work independently

● Familiarity with applicable OSHA and EPA standards

● Flexibility and creativity in execution methods for scenery is needed based on resources available

● Experience with QLab for video and Keynote preferred SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

● Strong leadership and collaborative skills

● Excellent communication and time management skills required

● Valid Driver’s License and clean driving record required

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

● Supervises Production Technicians, and student workers

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

● Indoor environments, some with low light: stages, backstage areas, dressing rooms, costume shop, storage spaces, prop and scenery storage, office spaces, workshop, control booth, off-campus performance spaces

● Seated and standing positions

● Stairs and ladders

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, ETC:

● Nights and weekends required

● On call during production cycles when not onsite

● Must be able to lift objects of up to 50 pounds

● Must be able to climb ladders up to 24 feet
