ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW
Vaughn Next Century Learning Center (“Vaughn”), located in Pacoima, is a large urban public school within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Since the early 1970s, low student achievement had been a pattern. In 1993, tired of being helpless and hopeless, Vaughn became the first conversion charter school in the nation and was authorized by LAUSD. The charter was renewed most recently in 2018. Vaughn has over 25 years of experience as a successful independent charter school serving the district’s low-income students. This previously failing elementary public school is now a full-service, community-based, K-12th charter school that assures all students are college/career ready, digitally literate, and globally competent.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Community Schools Liaison plays a vital role in fostering open communication and building meaningful relationships between Vaughn Schools and our diverse families. This individual is responsible for cultivating a strong sense of belonging among families, increasing family engagement, and empowering parents to support their children’s learning and wellbeing. The Community Schools Liaison will also recruit, train, and maintain close working relationships with parent champions or ambassadors at each school campus, ensuring that families have the tools and support they need to engage actively in their children’s education.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities:
Family Engagement & Communication:
- Serve as the primary point of contact for families, ensuring that they are informed about school events, programs, and opportunities.
- Foster open, consistent communication with families to build trust and a strong school-community relationship.
- Plan and implement outreach strategies to ensure all families feel welcomed, valued, and connected to the school community.
- Organize regular meetings, workshops, and family events that encourage parent participation and foster a supportive school environment.
Building Relationships & Community Engagement:
- Develop and maintain strong, positive relationships with parents, caregivers, and community members.
- Work collaboratively with families to increase their sense of belonging and investment in their child’s academic success and overall well-being.
- Identify and engage community resources and partnerships that can support families and enhance their capacity to support their children.
Parent Champions/Ambassadors:
- Recruit, train, and support parent champions or ambassadors at each campus to serve as liaisons between the school and the broader parent community.
- Provide guidance and support to parent champions in their roles as advocates for family engagement.
- Ensure that parent champions have the resources and tools needed to connect with other families and address concerns or needs within the community.
Capacity Building:
- Work with families to enhance their ability to support their children’s learning, including understanding educational expectations, resources, and
