About the role

   

The College of Veterinary Medicine is looking for an Assistant Waste Management Facility Operator.  This is a full-time temporary assignment for 3 months starting in July 2025.  Key responsibilities include:

  • Assist in the daily operation of the CVM Waste Management Facility (WMF) for the disposal of regulated medical waste, animal carcasses, waste animal bedding, and other potentially biohazardous pathological waste generated by the College, University and non-Cornell sources. 
  • Perform general cleaning and disinfection of the WMF
  • Assist WMF operators with transporting carcass and medical waste from other CVM facilities to the WMF. 
  • Support delivery of hazardous chemicals and shipment of hydrolysate wastewater. 
  • Assist with cleanup of spills of biohazardous materials anywhere at the Vet College.  
  • Assist with loading and unloading of waste treatment equipment. 
  • Assist others delivering medical and pathological waste to ensure compliance with University, State and Federal regulations. 
  • Assist with hydrocremations of animal remains. 

This position will require you to:

  • Work in areas where there is potential for contact with highly caustic chemicals, steam and other physical hazards, infectious agents, loud noises, and strong odors. 
  • Manipulate animal carcasses and clean up spills of blood and other body fluids
  • Follow strict safety procedures, including wearing required personal protective equipment. 
  • Wear face shields and other personal protective equipment for extended periods of time in hot environments. 

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma with demonstrated experience preparing medical waste for disposal, facility cleaning & disinfection, and/or handling intact and sectioned infectious (sometimes partially decayed) animal carcasses, or equivalent. 
  • Basic computer knowledge, including electronic mail, web, and business applications. 
  • Concentration and strong attention to detail essential. 
  • Experience in pathological waste or regulated medical waste treatment equipment, private cremations, as well as experience in handling bulk quantities of hazardous chemicals preferred.
