The University of Michigan Medical School seeks an accomplished and visionary leader for the position of Assistant Dean for Clinical Track Faculty. The University of Michigan Medical School (UMMS) serves as the academic engine for Michigan Medicine. Our dedicated UMMS faculty members help to achieve the mission of the medical school to transform health through bold and innovative education, discovery, and service.
Within the purview of the Office of Faculty Affairs, the Assistant Dean for Clinical Track Faculty provides leadership to and assists with the oversight of clinical track faculty appointments, promotions, and advancement. This individual serves as a representative of the Dean’s Office and the Medical School to internal and external constituencies, and will build on the institution’s significant strengths in clinical care, education, and scholarship.
Primary duties include, but are not limited to:
- Oversee and provide guidance for the Advisory Committee on Clinical Track Appointments and Promotions (CLINACAP) –the promotions committee for clinical track faculty – including presence at meetings, communication with the committee chairs, and orientation of new members.
- Serve as an advocate for clinical track faculty in the Medical School and University.
- Conduct third-year reviews and academic/promotion discussion meetings for clinical track faculty.
- Provide faculty career development counseling and advising for clinical track faculty.
- Participate in group educational and professional development sessions for clinical track faculty.
- In conjunction with the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty and Faculty Development, assist department chairs and administrators with faculty concerns and issues, recruitment strategies, review of faculty candidates for appointment and promotion in the clinical track selection, and career planning.
- Advise the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty and Faculty Development on matters relating to clinical track faculty, and participate in meetings, including monthly Assistant Deans’ meetings, to provide updates and develop policy and strategy in faculty affairs and faculty development.
- Foster and participate in academic projects and studies related to clinical track faculty.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
The successful candidate will be an active clinician with expertise and accomplishments in one or more of the following areas: clinical care, education, scholarship, service. Candidates must be Professor or Associate Professor on the Clinical Track. Candidates must be excellent communicators, highly collaborative, motivated, and have significant experience in faculty affairs and/or faculty development. They must have a demonstrated history of involvement in, and understanding of, faculty appointments and promotions at the departmental or institutional level. The candidate must be committed to and uphold institutional values of the Medical School, Michigan Medicine, and the University of Michigan.
Preferred Qualifications
Additional preferred qualifications include a good working knowledge of resources for faculty in the medical school and the University of Michigan, and training and/or experience in mentoring, advising, coaching, or sponsorship. High emotional intelligence, skills in conflict management, and the ability to effectively have difficult conversations are also desired qualifications.
Reporting Structure & Appointment
The selected individual will hold a 50% academic administrative appointment and report to the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty and Faculty Development.
Term of Appointment
This appointment is for five years with the potential for renewal for a second five-year term based on the review of the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty and Faculty Development.
