Lecturer - Educational Leadership (multiple positions)

The University of Maine at Farmington - the historic birthplace of teacher education in Maine - invites applications for Lecturers in the Master's in Educational Leadership with a concentration in School Administration for Academic Year 2025-2026 (summer) and Academic Year 2026-2027 (fall and spring).  

UMF is seeking experienced school administrators to serve as instructors for the next generation of Maine's K-12 school leaders.  This concentration and Graduate Certificate Administration is designed for practicing educators who are ready to take the next step in their careers.  Instructors help to provide the knowledge and skills needed to pursue leadership opportunities in school administration, preparing participants to guide and support educational communities effectively.

UMF serves a diverse population of traditional and non-traditional students across a range of liberal arts and professional programs.  To meet the needs of these learners, the University delivers general education and degree-specific coursework through a variety of modalities, including but not limited to: face-to-face, synchronous, and asynchronous instruction.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Curriculum Development: Design and maintain syllabi aligned with departmental expectation and established course blueprints.
• Instructional Delivery: Lead lesson planning and facilitate instruction via the Brightspace LMS or other instructional software.
• Student Support: Maintain regular correspondence, hold office hours, and provide timely grading and feedback.
• Professional Collaboration: Attend course coordination meetings with the Associate Deann of Graduate Education and complete required orientations and trainings.
• Modality Note: While courses are offered predominantly online, some courses may include other modalities (i.e. synchronous and/or asynchronous).

Sample Courses:

EDU 550 (School Law for Administrators): This course is a survey of the legal bases of public education in the United Stats and of contemporary legal issues and cases affecting the practice of school administration.  Although the primary objective is to acquaint the student with the legal principles governing public education in the nation and the State of Maine, special attention will be given to those topics of school law which are, or should be, of immediate concern to the practicing school administrator.

EDU 552 (Supervision and Evaluation of School Personnel):  This course provides an overview of supervisory practice in public schools.  It draws upon effective schools, effective teaching, teacher and adult development, and supervisory practice literature as a foundation for direct assistance to teachers and general supervisory work.  The course included Maine State Law regarding hiring and dismissal practices, just cause, contract issues, dismissal, non-renewal, progressive discipline, and complaint investigation. 

EDU 553 (Finance for School Administrators):  This course presents a comprehensive introduction to resource acquisition, management, and leadership at the school level.  Further, it is designed to engage students in exploring the practical realities of resource leadership and to examine in depth their own skills and knowledge in light of their goals for school leadership.  Specifically, in the course students will: 1) develop a comprehensive understanding of resource acquisition, management and employment as a central part of their leadership effectiveness; 2) understand the procedural and legal parameters for financial and other resource acquisition, management and deployment; and 3) build skills and understanding for leading this dimension of the school effectively.

Required Qualifications:

• Education: Master's Degree in Education or a closely related field.
• Professional Experience: Minimum of 3 years of formal leadership experience in a public school setting.
• Academic Preparation: Demonstrated academic background adequate for the courses to be taught.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Teaching Experience: At least two years of online or hybrid teaching experience at the college level.
• Licensing: Licensed in Maine as a Building Administrator or Superintendent (Endorsement 040).
