Clinical Nurse IV Leader - Duke University Hospital - DCT 6 Solid Organ Transplant Unit

 

This position is a Leadership position that will share time between administrative work and clinical work. The position with be a 1.0 FTE (40 hours/week) where two 12-hour shifts/week will be spent on the inpatient unit and two 8-hour shifts/week will be spent in office hours (this may change dependent on unit/employee needs).

The Abdominal Transplant (6DCT) Unit is comprised of 37 beds. Our team of nursing staff provide exemplary care for a variety of complex patients with diagnosis such as Pre-Liver Transplant, Liver Transplant, Kidney Transplant, Pancreas Transplant, Small Bowel Transplant and Hand Transplant.

Procedures/treatments frequently performed include diabetes management, pain management, wound care, telemetry, oxygen therapy, blood product administration, and IV management of fluids and medications.
Affords the clinical experience to attain strong critical thinking skills, vast knowledge of disease processes and body systems, and robust care management skills.
The unit cares for this patient population throughout the entirety of their Transplant experience beginning with inpatient care prior to transplant when necessary, care during their index Transplant stay, and care on any readmission. This fosters strong relationship between our patients and the care team while promoting continuity of care.
Daily multidisciplinary Transplant Rounds encompassing all care providers involved with the patient’s care; Case Management, Surgery, Medicine, Advanced Practice Providers, Transplant Coordinators, and Nursing.

 

General Description of the Job Class 

Plan and provide advanced and/or specialized nursing care for patients in accordance with guidelines established within the Discipline of Nursing Clinical Ladder Program and the North Carolina Board of Nursing. The position will provide local level leadership in the areas of administration, education, informatics and quality. 

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level 

Identify care needs for patient populations across the continuum of care. Collaborate and provide leadership in the development of standards of care, patient/family education and staff education to address the needs of specific populations. Collaborate with multidisciplinary team and provide leadership within the delivery of patient care. 

Provide leadership in educational activities, departmental committees, research projects and other health-related projects. 

Provide evaluation, direction and guidance in the proper selection, use, care and control of material resources. Appraise quality and effectiveness of material and equipment and collaborate with appropriate departments to assist with vendor selection and feedback on performance. 

Guide the professional growth of others across the continuum of care through role modeling, coaching and/or mentoring. This may include designing orientation modules, primary precepting of senior nursing students. 

Provide leadership at a departmental, entity, community or regional/national level for initiatives focused on improving the quality of care for populations of patients and growth of others. 

Conduct performance reviews. 

Effectively recommend personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, terminations and other related activities. 

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Leadership/Regulatory: Monitor clinical practice and ensure compliance to practice standards and regulatory standards. Collaborate with unit/clinic leadership to coach and mentor nursing colleagues. Influence recruitment and development of staff.
