TITLE

Student Development Specialist III – Houston

JOB SUMMARY 

Performs a wide variety of services and programs that enhance students’ knowledge, understanding skills essential for academic success, personal development and exercise of leadership. Responsible for advising and mentoring Student Government in a manner that facilitates student engagement.  Responsible for understanding, interpreting, formulating, and evaluating policies and procedures related to student organizations. Actively supports Orientation, Redbud Awards and Commencement.  Fosters relationships and assists in program facilitation and assessment with other Student Life departments (particularly in Denton). Work is performed under general supervision and performance is based upon completion of assignments and results obtained. The performance evaluation is conducted through the performance evaluation system and accordance with the University Policies & Procedures. 

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to:   Assistant Director for Student Life – Houston

Supervises:  No supervisory responsibilities 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES - May include, but not limited to the following:

  • Advises the Student Government Association in program development, implementation and evaluation.
  • Populates information in Oracle for hire and payment of Student Government officers. 
  • Assists in shaping the direction and vision of Student Government, guided by the priorities outlined in the Strategic Plan.
  • Evaluates current programs and encourages development of new directions as appropriate. 
  • Facilitates the registration and advisement of student organizations, including guidance with Pioneer Engage, the system used to record all student organization registrations. 
  • Provides training/development for faculty/staff advisors.
  • Coordinates student involvement and leadership development opportunities.
  • Promotes the development of new student organizations.
  • Coordinates with Design Services in the crafting of advertisements for events/activities.
  • Organizes a calendar of events/activities each semester.
  • Conceptualizes activities in accord with university/department Strategic Plan and desired measurable outcomes.
  • Co-coordinates Student Life programming.
  • Completes contract related forms for programming, including requisition requests; coordinates with respective vendors the submission of forms for requested services. 
  • Reconciles purchasing card transactions in a timely manner, submitting all receipts and supporting documentation. 
  • Demonstrates operational knowledge and practice of program assessment.
  • Assists Assistant Director for Student Life with the planning and facilitation of the Orientation Program.
  • Assists Assistant Director for Student Life with the planning and facilitation of the Redbud Awards.
  • Supports the overall operation of the Office of Student Life in its daily operations, including such functions as making ID badges, renting lockers, and acting as a resource in numerous areas.
  • Collaborates with other offices (especially in Denton) to develop programs/events onsite as well as online.
  • Assists in maintaining Student Life presence on social media sites. 

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  1. Performs other duties as requested.

EDUCATION 

 Bachelor’s degree in higher education, student development, counseling, or a related field required. Master’s degree preferred. Additional education beyond a Master’s degree may substitute for some of the required experience.

EXPERIENCE

One to two years of related work experience advising students and student groups; may include graduate student work/assistantship/s. 

REQUIREMENT

Regular and reliable attendance at the University during regular scheduled days and work hours is an essential function of this position.
