The New Mexico Tumor Registry (NMTR) is a population-based cancer registry that has served New Mexico since 1966.  The NMTR gathers, maintains, analyzes, and disseminates cancer surveillance data and supports scientific investigations of cancer. The NMTR is a division of the Cancer Control and Population Sciences Program at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC).  The NMTR is a founding member of the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program and we have been continuously funded by the SEER Program since 1973.  Data collected by NMTR is routinely used to document and track trends in cancer occurrence and care, support scientific research and inform public health policy. 

NMTR is seeking a highly motivated, customer service–oriented Senior Business Manager to lead the day-to-day operations of the registry and support its continued growth and success. This role provides oversight of administrative operations, fiscal management, and contracts and grants administration, ensuring efficient processes, strong financial stewardship, and compliance with institutional and sponsor requirements. The Senior Business Manager plays a key role in supporting the program’s mission by maintaining effective operations and fostering a collaborative, service-oriented environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

Administrative Operations Management

  • Provides day-to-day human resources support for the department, including faculty and staff recruitment, employment paperwork, onboarding, payroll, processing term extensions, and responding to HR-related inquiries from staff and faculty.
  • Supervises administrative staff, providing guidance, training, and support to ensure effective departmental operations.
  • Oversees management of leadership calendars, department scheduling needs, and planning of departmental training sessions and events.
  • Oversees the planning and scheduling of department travel.
  • Oversees and coordinates building and facilities requests and related services for the department.
  • Develops and implements systems and processes to establish and maintain operational and administrative records.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, and maintenance of departmental policies, objectives, and short- and long-range plans; develops and implements projects and programs to support departmental goals.
  • Serves as a consulting resource to faculty leadership in the development of business management strategies and business-related initiatives.

Fiscal Management

  • Manages the daily financial activities of the department, including budget preparation, accounting, purchasing, and business planning to ensure compliance with university policies, as well as state and federal regulations.
  • Oversees and serves as a backup for all department PCard purchases, PO processing, invoice payments, and travel reimbursements.
  • Collaborates with the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center Finance team to prepare budget requests, operating budgets, legislative budget requests, and formal budget revisions as required.
  • Prepares monthly financial reports and presents findings to department leadership.
  • Coordinates, designs, and implements internal financial reporting systems, financial controls, and management information systems in alignment with the university’s automated financial systems.

Contracts and Grants Management

  • Coordinates the financial components of research proposals, contracts, and subcontracts, including budget development, proposal preparation, and adherence to sponsor requirements; serves as a liaison with funding sources as appropriate.
  • Collaborates with HSC Pre-Award to prepare and submit all contract and grant proposals.
  • Collaborates with HSC Contracts and Grants to setup and close out incoming contracts, grants, and subcontracts, including the annual setup of the SEER contract.
  • Collaborates with the HSC Sponsored Projects Office to issue outgoing subcontracts and review subcontract invoices for accuracy and compliance.
  • Coordinates the preparation of required reports for contracts, grants, and subcontracts to ensure compliance with sponsor requirements.
  • Prepares monthly SEER invoices and annual inventory reports and assists with additional reporting requirements related to the SEER contract.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

This is a term position. The initial term date will be until 4/30/2027, with one-year terms possible after that.
