Job Description Summary

The Fellow will spend the year at Penn conducting research related to the philosophy of G.E.M. Anscombe, whose archive is preserved at the Penn Library, delivering two talks on campus and producing two papers related to this research. The fellow will participate in the events and projects of Penn’s Perry-Collegium Initiative and contribute to its intellectual life.

This is a one-year term appointment.

Job Description

The John and Daria Barry Foundation Fellow position serves the University of Pennsylvania’s Program for Research on Religion and Urban Civil Society (PRRUCS), which is a subunit of the Penn Partnership for Innovation, Cross-Sector Collaboration, Leadership, and Organization (PICCLO).  The Barry Fellow is affiliated with the PRRUCS Perry-Collegium program, which explores questions of religion in the modern polis and contemporary university. 

In 2018, PRRUCS and the University of Pennsylvania library obtained the papers of G.E.M. (Elizabeth) Anscombe.  This Collegium Institute Anscombe Archive at Penn has only recently been made available for researchers affording the John and Daria Barry Foundation Fellow a distinctive opportunity to conduct research on one of the leading philosophers of the twentieth century.

Responsibilities

The Fellow will spend the year at Penn conducting research related to the philosophy of G.E.M. Anscombe, whose archive (The Collegium Institute Anscombe Archive at the University of Pennsylvania) is preserved at the Penn Library’s Kislak Center for Special Collections. The Barry Fellow will deliver two on-campus “thoughts in progress” Perry-Collegium talks, one in fall 2025 and the other in spring 2026. PRRUCS will co-sponsor events, workshops, and conferences related to research associated with the Anscombe Archives and related to the work of its Perry-Collegium Initiative.  The Barry Fellow will plan
