Summary

The Utility Maintenance Technician must perform a variety of unskilled and/or semi-skilled laboring tasks as a member of a crew involved in the construction and maintenance of  Water and Sewer systems or Stormwater systems for Metro Water Services. Performs related duties as required. Employees hired in this position will learn utility maintenance and equipment operation. Successful employees will receive raises and promotions as they gain new skills.

The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress that require a range of safety and other precautions. The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing of tall ladders, lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, or crouching or crawling in restricted areas.  Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions and in rugged terrain for long periods of time. Overtime and weekend work may be required.

Employees at Metro Water Services work around the clock to ensure high quality drinking water, and the best in storm water management and wastewater treatment for the residents of Nashville-Davidson County and some surrounding areas. It takes electricians, chemists, engineers, mechanics, information technology workers, customer service representatives and more working together to service more than 176,000 water and 189,000 sewer accounts.


Examples of duties

  • Installs and/or repairs service lines, water mains, sewer mains, storm sewers, storm sewer systems and all related components and appurtenances.
  • Performs setup, operation and maintenance on jet vactor.
  • May use leak sounding equipment and/or metal detectors.
  • May perform basic masonry.
  • May perform repairs and restoration to lawns, driveways, pavement, fences, mailboxes and other improvements as needed due to construction and/or repair activities.
  • May clean bank of debris in a stream, river or culvert.
  • Clears debris or foliage from public right-of-ways, which can include under bridges, in channels or creeks.
  • Cleans, maintains and operates various hand and power tools, and equipment.
  • May operate, tow, or transport equipment or commercial motor vehicles (with required licenses and/or certifications – these may be acquired after hiring).
  • Performs as a spotter for heavy equipment operators.
  • May perform as a traffic control flagger (after training).
  • May assist in the change out of components of heavy equipment used in repair and maintenance activities.
  • May assist in the setup and use of tapping machinery.
  • May assist in the setup, maintenance and repair of televising equipment and crawlers.
  • Removes and installs water meters and appropriate fittings.
  • Performs clean-up of sanitary sewer overflows.
  • Reads and interprets water, sewer and stormsewer on GIS (Geographic Information System).
  • May conduct preventative maintenance inspections.
  • Assists in the demolition of FEMA and flood prone homes and structures.
  • Performs excavation and landscaping.

Qualifications

Eighth Grade Education.

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
 
LICENSES REQUIRED
Valid Driver License

Supplemental information

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Valid "Class A" Driver's License or "Class A" with "57" Restriction.
  • One year experience working with Water, Sewer or Stormwater infrastructure
