Job Description: Medical Assistant 

 

Job Status: Part Time  (Non-Exempt) 

 

Reports To: Practice Administrator and Physicians 

 

Overview:  

This position description has been designed to indicate the general nature and level of work performed by employees within this classification. Job Summary: 

Medical Assistants perform routine administrative and clinical tasks to keep the offices of physicians and other health practitioners running smoothly. The duties of Medical Assistants vary from setting to setting, depending on the size, location, and type. In addition to administrative duties, Medical Assistants perform clinical duties in accordance with state law. 

Position Responsibilities: (include, but are not limited to) 

Clerical: 

  • Greets patients and ensures completion of registration forms 

  • Calls in prescriptions to the pharmacy 

  • Punctual and dependent for assigned/confirmed shifts 

  • Updates or populates patient chart with relevant medical data updating as needed. 

  • Performs accurate, legal, and ethical documentation at all times 

  • Assists in orientation and training of new M.A.’s and scribes 

  • Comprehends and adheres to all rules, regulations, and procedures of the Practice Compliance Program, including OIG Program, HIPAA, OSHA, CLIA, and any other state, local, or federally mandated regulations that affect a physician’s office 

  • Ensures computer programs are locked when leaving patient rooms, nurse’s station, and shut down all computer at the end of the day 

  • Follows protocol for each doctor, being aware of individual preferences. 

  • Informs practice administrator of any concerns related to compliance issues (OIG, HIPAA Privacy and Security, State medical board etc.) 

  • Directs patients to checkout after their visit. 

  • Represents the practice and its staff and physicians in a professional, courteous, and respectful manner on or off property. 

  • Cross-trains to cover phones, front desk, medical records when needed. 

  • Performs any other duties as requested and delegated by the physician or practice administrator. 

  • Calls in prescriptions to the pharmacy. 

  • Responsible to start prior authorizations of medications. 

 

Clinical: 

  • Verifies imaging studies, pathology, and lab reports, etc. in patient charts for physician before patient appointment 

  • Maintains supplies, equipment, stocks, and sterilizes instruments 

  • Cleans rooms and removes instruments/exam items after each patient, setting up tray to physician preference. 

  • Washes instruments and empties exam room trash cans at the end of the day 

  • Ensures there are enough clean instruments in the exam rooms for physician use. 

  • Autoclaves instruments as necessary. 

  • Sterilizes scopes. 

  • Measures and records vital signs, and records patient interview, history, and chief complaint 

  • Assists physician with exams and in-office surgery procedures, and performs medical assisting procedures under supervision of, or as delegated by a physician 

  • Performs scribe duties when the physician examines the patient, and records all data as dictated by the physician in the exam room 

  • Prepares the note for electronic signature and checks to be sure the physician has signed off on all notes for the day 

  • Maintains autoclave and suction cannisters 

  • Assists with Pharmaceutical Rep. Visits and is responsible for maintaining and stocking drug samples.
