Job Description:

Job Summary:

The State Tax Accountant II is responsible for sharing duties between the State and Local Income Tax and Non-Income tax teams, helping to prepare state tax compliance filings and sales/use and property tax filings as well as contributing to any ad hoc state tax projects.

Depth & Scope:

  • Assists with the preparation and finalization of state income and franchise tax compliance items, including estimates, returns, state apportionment, and addressing state tax notices
  • Assists with the preparation and finalization of non-income tax compliance items, including sales/use and property tax filings
  • Assists with collection of state/local and non-income tax data for PTR work.  Detailed responsibilities include ensuring tax liabilities are accurately reflected in the tax calendar; ensuring return workpapers accurately reflect tax credit utilization and carry forwards; ensuring return workpapers accurately reflect NOL utilization and carry forwards; and aggregate other state return data necessary to track deferred tax assets
  • Assists with special tax projects (e.g., documentation for state audits, tax planning calculations, amended returns, etc.)
  • Contributes to the strategic direction of the State/Local Income Tax and Non-Income Tax teams by keeping current on emerging issues, industry trends, and relevant accounting changes
  • Able to work autonomously and flexibly, pivoting daily duties as needed and efficiently prioritizing work needs of the groups with minimal supervision
  • Ensures ongoing communication with each team on the status/progress of projects, issues, and points of interest
  • Helps identify and drive process improvements related to all aspects of the State/Local Tax and Non-income Tax team's obligations and methodologies, so to enhance the overall process by reducing complexity and minimizing error and time consumption

  • Provides technical expertise and analysis to management and business partners
  • Works across and support other finance/tax teams, coordinating financial information requests and providing state tax data as needed

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in accounting
  • 3+ years tax accounting experience with emphasis on State and Local Income Tax
  • Experience with Financial Institutions preferred
  • CPA/MS/MBA preferred
  • Must be detail oriented and possess problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in oral and written interpersonal communication and can effectively communicate with all levels of staff and management
