Work Schedule: Primarily daytime hours with flexibility for occasional evening, weekend, and overnight needs.

Provide day to day management and long-term planning of the patient care area.

Accountable for the delivery of quality care to patients and families according to the individualized needs of the patient.

Responsibilities:

Essential Job Functions

1. Demonstrates ability to individualize patient care in the age-specific population being served.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify opportunities for, and give individual customer service/patient care, according to customer/patient needs.


2. Standards and Accountability.

  • Responsible for completing probationary/annual performance evaluations for all staff members.
  • Direct observation of staff performance at regular intervals.
  • Addresses areas of concern on an individual basis and at staff meetings.
  • Collaborates with physicians and other clinical disciplines as appropriate.
  • Monitors staff's practice of Standard Precautions, aseptic and sterile technique, and sharps disposal.
  • Is familiar with and ensures nursing protocols, clinical practices, and standards of care are instituted unit specific.
  • Use Evidence Based Practice to promote quality outcomes.
  • Reports issues/trends to Service Leader/Service Executive.

3. Leading.

  • Coaches staff on the integration of patient safety into daily work (patient identification, write down and read back all phone /verbal orders, do not use abbreviation list, high alert medications, medication reconciliation, patient falls, time out).
  • Maintains appropriate staffing for adequate coverage and census variation.
  • Posts hours to be filled in conjunction with Service Leader/Service Executive.
  • Interviews and hires new staff members in conjunction with the Service Leader/Service Executive.
  • Responsible for staff employee relations including disciplinary action and terminations.
  • Maintains positive work environment.
  • Role model for employees.
  • Encourages teamwork among staff and interdisciplinary team.
  • Provides rewards and recognition to promote staff acknowledgement.


4. Assures that operations are managed efficiently while maintaining quality.

  • Assists in establishing and operating within annual area budget.
  • Identifies supply and equipment utilization problems and ensures appropriate interventions.
  • Audits EMR documentation to ensure staff compliance of standards of care per policy.
  • Assists staff clinically and in the core coordinator role when the need arises.

5. Assures professional development of staff.

  • Coordinates with Clinical Nurse Specialist/Staff Development Nurse, and Clinical Nurse Educator for in-services, workshops and other Continuing Education Unit offerings.
  • Promotes professional development for all staff.
  • Facilitates staff meetings.
  • Monitors completion of annual reviews, Basic Life Support and RN licensure, and other requirements.


6. Establishes and maintains a Performance Improvement program which monitors important aspects of care.

  • Monitors patient satisfaction surveys and establish action plans as needed.
  • Establishes and monitors PI initiatives using reports and audit tools.
  • Monitors on an ongoing basis environmental safety issues and appropriate interventions taken.
  • Provides input into the development and revision of policies and procedures.
  • Assures completion of appropriate report form for any risk (e.g., variance report, patient concern report, maintenance request).
  • Communicates with appropriate personnel regarding unresolved issues.
  • Conducts random interviews with patients and staff.
  • Monitors the handling of calls and response times.
