Arkema Inc. is actively recruiting for a Safety Specialist to support our Beaumont facility. At Arkema, the Safety Specialist is responsible for providing technical expertise and acting as a resource for the HES Manager and Plant Management in the areas of safety and industrial hygiene by applying technical expertise in recognizing, monitoring, and evaluating exposure risks. The Safety Specialist will be responsible for the development and delivery of training to the Beaumont site as it relates to safety and industrial hygiene. This position reports directly to the Safety Team Lead and requires direct interaction with other departmental staff positions to exchange information and ideas directly related to the success of the Beaumont Plant and Thiochemicals Group.
The Beaumont Plant is located in Southeast Texas about 30 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico and is about one hour drive east of Houston. Our facility is responsible for the production of methyl mercaptan, ethyl mercaptan, dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and methylmercaptoproprionaldehyde (MMP).
This position is responsible for, but not limited to:
- Manage, coordinate, and execute Safety and Health programs, including Safe Work Practice and Industrial Hygiene programs, Hazcom, Plant Inspection Program, and Air monitoring programs.
- Conduct training sessions for staff on safety policy, safety programs, and industrial hygiene programs.
- Report Sara Title III - Tier II activities.
- Issue Safety Permits and carry out other HSE activities as required.
- Direct teams and seek facility input/participation to drive key initiatives, ensuring organizational buy-in through effective persuasion and communication.
- Serve as the Radiation Safety Officer for the site.
- Participate in internal audit teams to ensure site compliance with regulatory and company initiatives.
- Fulfill the duties of the Safety Team Lead in their absence as assigned.
- Guide facility efforts in establishing and maintaining accurate Job Demands Forms, Job Exposure Profiles, Job Safety Analysis, and associated PPE assessments.
- Oversee the New Chemical Approval program for the Beaumont Site.
- Lead the development and execution of plant-wide compliance strategies to ensure adherence to federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations.
- Oversee emergency preparedness activities to guarantee regulatory compliance and the accomplishment of departmental goals.
- Collaborate with site and management teams to establish and achieve site safety targets and objectives in alignment with corporate safety strategic initiatives.
- Perform safety audits to identify and rectify unsafe work conditions, ensuring complete adherence to safety regulations.
- Execute activities outlined in the facility's annual HSE Plan and actively contribute to achieving Key Performance Indicators.
- Engage with external stakeholders such as regulatory agencies, trade associations, and non-governmental organizations to advocate for company policies and explore benchmarking opportunities.
- Assist in the development, implementation, and assessment of safety systems, including evaluating safety needs and providing technical support to various departments.
- Promote employee involvement in safety initiatives and act as a contact point for site safety teams when required.
- Participate in investigations of accidents and incidents, determining root causes and implementing measures to prevent recurrence.
- Collaborate with the emergency response team to offer technical expertise in the development and implementation of emergency response policies, processes, and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant governmental regulations while upholding company standards to sustain a safe working environment.
To be considered for this role, the following is required:
- B.S. Degree in Safety or closely related field preferred with relevant chemical/petrochemical industry plus minimum 5 years of experience of industrial hygiene as well as safety and health programs.
