Assistant Professor, Theatre Studies (Tenure-track)

Description

Saint Mary’s College of California seeks a dynamic director, acting instructor, and student mentor for the full-time, tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in Theatre. Key responsibilities include directing mainstage productions; teaching acting classes; mentoring the student-directed festival of one-act plays (which also serves as the capstone project for undergraduates); and the ability to take on program/departmental leadership positions over time. The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in directing; producing; community-building; social justice-informed group facilitation; and diversity, equity and inclusion practices as they relate to the art, craft, discipline, and industry of live Theatre. We are interested in candidates who are examining the intersection of anti-racism, decolonization and artistic practice, and whose work is consonant with the institution’s Lasallian Core Principles. They will have experience leading culturally diverse classrooms; the ability to foster a student-centered, interactive and collaborative learning environment; excellence in collaboration and communication skills; and will demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate Liberal Arts education. 

 

This full-time appointment includes the expectation of significant service to the program and College, including: advising majors and minors, mentoring capstone projects, involvement in the annual scholarship selection process and other recruitment activities, as well as service on appropriate department and College-wide committees. Opportunities to contribute may include curriculum development, creative collaboration with other faculty members, and cultivation of community partnerships beyond the institution. The faculty member will be responsible for leading curriculum for the Performance and Theatre Studies concentration of the theatre major and minor. 

 

Tenure-track faculty members are also required to maintain active, ongoing scholarship. From the Performing Arts “framing statement” for Rank & Tenure review:

Scholarship for Performing Arts faculty is recognized in many ways. We are creative practitioners [dancers, musicians, actors]; creative makers [choreographers, composers, directors, designers]; disciplinary researchers [somatics, music history, theatre history, dramaturgy]; creative collaborators, working together with many members of an artistic and/or research team; and culture bearers, evolving cultural art practices that educate, exchange, and share in order to preserve ancestral knowledge. Scholarly achievement in the Performing Arts can consist of (but is not limited to) written publications, performances, designing, master classes, articles, books, conducting, international and cross-cultural exchange, being invited to adjudicate a competition, serving on panels for artistic grant processes, presenting at conferences, commissioned artistic work, and other achievements.

 

The successful applicant will demonstrate:

• Active engagement in scholarly and/or creative research. (See above.)

• The capacity to take on leadership roles in an academic setting.

• An interest and aptitude for teaching in one or both of the two signature programs of the College: Collegiate Seminar and/or January Term.
