The chief of the Division of Hand Surgery in the Department of Orthopaedics will provide strategic leadership and direction for all aspects of the Division. The chief of Hand Surgery will be responsible for all planning, policy, operations, and oversight of the Division's academic, research, and clinical programs. This leader will have financial authority over the state-appropriated budget assigned to the Division, extramural research funding received, philanthropic funding, and other Division-related financial matters, in accordance with applicable University policies and practices. The chief will have discretion in the recruitment and retention of Division faculty who will have a direct reporting line to the chief of the Division of Hand Surgery.
This position reports directly to the chair of the Department of Orthopaedics within the College of Medicine – Phoenix for all academic activities. Consistent with the Academic Affiliation Agreement (AAA) between the University of Arizona and Banner Health, the chief will have a matrix reporting relationship to the CEO of Banner – University Medical Group (B—UMG) and the CEO of Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix (B—UMCP) for all clinical activities conducted at B—UMCP.
This role provides strategic, clinical, and academic leadership for the Division of Hand Surgery while maintaining a robust clinical practice focused on hand surgery, with a subspecialty interest encouraged. The division chief will foster excellence in patient care, education, research, faculty development, and ambulatory growth aligned with the missions of the University of Arizona and Banner Health.
The successful candidate will fulfill the responsibilities of a faculty member in an appropriate department, actively participate in teaching, clinical service, and/or scholarly work, and must qualify for an appointment at the rank of associate or full professor.

Duties & Responsibilities- Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Division of Hand Surgery, ensuring alignment with departmental, college and Banner Health priorities.
- Lead divisional efforts in quality, safety, patient outcomes and clinical standardization, including out-patient based surgery and value-based care initiatives.
- Partner with departmental and BUMG leadership on ambulatory growth strategies, access, clinic efficiency and care model optimization.
- Support faculty recruitment, onboarding, mentoring and professional development within the Division.
- Oversee divisional performance metrics, including volume, quality outcomes, patient experience and financial stewardship.
- Collaborate with hospital and health system leaders on service line development, technology adoption and program expansion.
- Participate in departmental and institutional leadership committees as appropriate.
- Maintain an active adult hand and upper extremity surgery within Banner – University Medical Group.
