Position Summary
The Senior Research Machinist is responsible for managing the day-to-day activities of the College of Engineering (CoE) Machine Shop and is responsible for completing or overseeing the completion of assignments in the construction, assembly, maintenance, and repair of a wide variety of machine parts, using tools and equipment that require a high degree of accuracy and precision. The Senior Research Machinist works closely with students, faculty and staff to assess their needs in regards to production of various parts and projects and experiments maintaining an efficient workflow in the Shop. Provide oversight of CoE remote machine shops utilized by student organizations, maintains a safe working environment, assuring all accepted safety standards are met and
maintained.
- Operations: Operates specialized equipment such as lathes, vertical milling machines, drill presses,
surface grinders, band saw welder, sheet metal shears, sheet metal brakes, and punch presses, pallet jacks, forklifts and other machine shop tools. Performs wood working and carpentry tasks, using routers, table saws, joiners, drum sanders, glue up and fitting for various projects. Utilizes tools while working to precision tolerances using micrometers calipers, squares, depth micrometers, dial indicators, gauge blocks, sine bars, height gauges, and surface plates used in the fabrication of field and laboratory gear and instruments while fulfilling the project goals of the machine shop. Assists in moving and placement of furniture and equipment within the College. Scheduling and monitoring the usage and maintenance of the Colleges vehicles. - Support: Manage shop projects and resources in accordance with priorities, time, and budget requirements in support of major research fabrication equipment. Maintains a work order system for job and usage reports to the supervisor.
Determines workflow, sets schedules, prioritizes projects for faculty, staff, and student job requests, and determines equipment needs for projects.
Machine and fabricate equipment essential to the scientific research conducted by the college; designs and constructs tooling, special fixtures, experimental research instruments, and equipment from CAD drawings, blueprints, or sketches, when they are available; selects proper materials supplies, and consumables for each job. Consults with research staff and faculty as necessary to determine methods and materials required. - Student Organization: Oversee student organizations and capstone utilizing any CoE Remote Machine Shop setting, on proper operation and safe use of equipment. Conducts training or workshops for faculty, students, and staff, and other users to foster learning in the area of fabrication and the safe operation and handling of Machine shop equipment. Provide critical technical advice, design, and oversight for the research projects that require Machine shop fabrication expertise and proper use and safe storage of hazardous chemicals. Ensure a safe environment is maintained for all students working in these remote areas.
- Maintenance & Safety: Responsible for the maintenance and repair of all shop machinery and equipment, assure all equipment are properly guarded and meet OSHA, ANSI, and other accepted standards.
Designs, implements, establishes, and propagates Machine shop safety standards and best practices. - Perform other duties as deemed necessary by the department manager in support of CoE
