About the role

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Student Diversity and Belonging (SDAB), the Event Coordinator is responsible for assisting on largescale SDAB events with a special focus on CORE, Cultural Fest, PCW, State of events, and Heritage Month events. The Event Coordinator is responsible for supporting training and communication for volunteers and student leads and provides logistical coordination of events, including but not limited to coordinating and attending planning meetings, event set up and clean up, projecting and tracking expenditures, scheduling and tracking attendance, ensuring subcommittee leads are meeting project deadlines and working with vendors and contracts. This position will work with community center coordinators and other campus partners to provide an exceptional student experience at SDAB events. This role will also support the Director with administrative duties involving calendaring, timekeeping, budget, finance, and procurement activities.

This is a full-time temporary 6 month and 1 day position and is eligible for full benefits, including medical, dental, vision and CalPERS retirement.

Department Summary

Student Diversity and Belonging (SDAB) is a collaborative sub-division of community centers that serve an active role in creating a culturally enriching environment at Cal Poly’s campus and in San Luis Obispo.  We instill understandings of diversity and inclusive excellence by facilitating identity-affirming spaces of belonging and student-centered programming, student support services, and peer educational learning opportunities.  Our unit is comprised of the following cultural centers: Black Academic Excellence Center (BAEC), Dream Center, Gender Equity Center (GEC), Latinx/e Center for Academic Success and Achievement (La CASA), MultiCultural Center (MCC), Men & Masculinities Center, Native American and Indigenous Cultural Center (NAICC) and Pride Center.  

Key Qualifications

  • Ability to learn, interpret independently and apply a variety of complex policies and procedures where specific guidelines may not exist. Ability to use judgment and discretion to act when precedents do not exist.
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity and commitment to issues of diversity.
  • Thorough knowledge of office methods, procedures, and practices. Ability to troubleshoot most office administration problems and respond to all inquiries and requests related to work area
  • Ability to apply independent judgment, discretion, and initiative to address problems and develop practical, thorough and, at times, creative solutions.
  • Ability to use negotiation and persuasion skills to achieve results and expedite projects.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or its equivalent. Type 45 wpm.  Five years of general office support or technical experience. (Training at a vocational school or full-time college education may be substituted for two years of the required experience on the basis of one year of college education for 6 months of experience).

Salary and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Range: $50,962 - $66,534 Per Year

Classification Range: $48,696 - $79,836 Per Year

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Anticipated Hiring Range referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Classification Range may be broader than what the University anticipates paying for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
