Senior Onboard Software Engineer (Onsite or US Remote)
MotionalAbout the role
Mission Summary:
Motional’s self-driving vehicles depend on advanced robotics algorithms to drive safely and robustly, and just as importantly, they require well-designed and tested onboard infrastructure software to help support those functions. This includes the infrastructure to log our data, to orchestrate our sequence of robotics tasks, robustly read from our sensors, and more.
In this role, as a senior onboard software engineer, Motional will look to you to evaluate the readiness of our onboard infrastructure software for our driverless launches. You will be a key stakeholder in the design, development, and testing of our onboard software to ensure a high quality engineering bar matching our safety needs. This includes designing safety into our system by ensuring common fault paths are properly accounted for, helping ensure strong coding practices are in place, and ensuring proper test coverage of all critical onboard infrastructure software. This role isn’t an advisory role--you will be expected to take part in most of these activities, spearheading them where they haven’t been done and otherwise supporting them where necessary.
What you'll be doing:
- Brainstorm failure modes of our onboard infrastructure, estimate the safety impact of the failure modes, and deduce the priority of a given concern
- Help modify our onboard software to become more robust to a given potential failure mode
- Design, execute, and analyze specialized tests (as unit tests, simulation tests, vehicle track tests, etc.) to demonstrate our onboard software’s robustness
- Help create high-quality documentation of our onboard infrastructure’s architecture
- Improve our custom internal testing tools to make them easier to use or make them capable of testing more complex behavior
What we're looking for:
- A bachelor’s degree in a related field, ideally Computer Science
- Five or more years development experience, preferably in C++
- A passion for good engineering practices, with a strong sense of many different testing modalities and where they are needed (unit testing, integration testing, bench testing of embedded platforms, etc.)
- Experience deriving how low-level technical details imply properties of the overall software behavior
- A build-it attitude, willing to step in where necessary to build the infrastructure necessary to meet our product’s demands
- Strong communication and collaboration skills--the role requires a strong relationship with several onboard software teams and the safety team
Bonus Points (not required):
- A master’s degree in a related field (e.g., Computer Science, Math, Physics, Electrical Engineering, etc.)
- A working knowledge of common systems engineering deliverables, including Failure Mode and Effects Analyses, Functional Hazard Analysis, etc.
- Experience with multi-threaded software development
- Experience developing for embedded hardware
