Job Description

As a weapon effect modeling engineer, the primary responsibility will be to study the impact of various incidents (conventional blast, chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear weapons) on the built environment and human beings. The outcome of the research will be translated to model weapon impacts on large insurance portfolios in terms of monetary cost due to property damage and human casualty. The candidate will work closely with a team of specialists to perform a probabilistic risk assessment by various possible weapon attacks, and present and explain results to technical and non-technical audiences including VERISK clients and government officials.
A successful candidate should have a strong technical background in science, engineering, or mathematics, have passion and desire to learn, and is expected to be a highly motivated, detail-oriented, well-organized, self-directed, and excellent team player. Responsibilities (main responsibilities, but not limited to):
- Simulate the impact of conventional blast, and release of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear weapons on built environments and human beings
- Use the above research to develop solutions for risk assessment of insurance portfolios
- Represent VERISK to explain view of risks to technical and non-technical audiences
- Author technical writing for internal and external publications
Qualifications
- Experience with 3D CDF analysis, preferably used blastFoam to estimate blast wave propagation, and/or its effects on buildings and human in urban setting
- Experience in using DoD simulation tools for blast effects and plume simulation due to release of hazardous materials
- Familiarity with C++ and data mining skills using tools such as R, Matlab and others
- Ability to communicate effectively through verbal and written mediums with technical and non-technical audiences
- Strong data archiving and documentation mindset
- Experience with GIS applications (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, etc.) a plus
- MS with 2+ years of relevant experience or PhD in science, engineering, or mathematics
