A Brief Overview
A pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) nurse is a specialized type of nurse who cares for patients under 18 in the PICU. They are responsible for providing direct, hands-on care to these patients and coordinating with other medical professionals to ensure that they receive the best possible treatment. Training begins with learning the role of the Pediatric/ Young Adult Center RN, which allows for a strong foundation in pediatrics and allows versatility in the PICU RN role. Successful Pediatric intensive care nurses need strong clinical skills and attention to detail to provide excellent patient care in a high intensity situations. Fast critical thinking skills are also essential for PICU nurses to make good, split-second care decisions.

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree Bachelors of Science: Nursing (BSN) Preferred


Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to rights of patient/significant other, as identified within the institution. (Required proficiency)
  • Demonstrates awareness and application of safety issues as identified within the institution. (Required proficiency)
  • Demonstrates awareness of legal issues in all aspects of patient care and departmental functioning. Strives to manage situations in a manner, which minimizes risk to the patient and the institution. (Required proficiency)
  • Demonstrates competency in selected psychomotor skills. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, non-verbal and written methods. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations related to medication administration and equipment calibration. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. (Required proficiency)


Licenses and Certifications

  • Registered Nurse - KSBN A multistate license with the ability to practice within the State of Kansas is also accepted. Required
  • Basic Life Support - BLS Must have within 90 days of hire.
  • RQI, CPR or ACLS certifications may be required in lieu of or in addition to BLS depending on department.
  • Pediatric Chemotherapy & Biotherapy Provider - Magnet - CPHON - Magnet Required only for staff administering chemotherapy
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support - PALS For staff providing sedation assistance Preferred
  • Certified Pediatric Nurse - PNCB - Magnet Preferred
  • Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization - PEARS Preferred
