About the role

CLOSING DATE: June 16, 2024

Did you know that one of the leading institutional investors in the world is based on Vancouver Island? BCI, headquartered in Victoria, BC, and managing 233 billion in assets on behalf of British Columbia’s public sector, has over 780 employees working in its global offices.

Utilize your tax experience to take on the challenge of working for a leading investment management firm and further your career! The level at which you join will be determined by your experience and education, but your success will depend on your willingness to learn and grow on the job.

WHAT YOU GET TO DO

You will assist the Tax team with aspects of Canadian and international tax and indirect tax in private equity, infrastructure and renewable resources, private credit, and public markets. You will work closely with investment professionals and external tax advisors on complex, time-sensitive issues, often with competing deadlines. You will work in a team environment and will take ownership of various workstreams and projects.

WHAT YOU BRING

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of three years related experience in taxation and have a professional accounting or law designation (CPA, CA, CGA, CMA, JD, LL.B., or international equivalent) or in the process of pursuing one. However, we encourage you – yes, you! – to apply, even if you feel you don’t meet all the requirements on our wish list (or feel over-qualified!). We value intelligence and creativity and know that some skills can be learned on the job. Your role may change depending on what experience you bring with you.

A career growth plan will be tailored to you and will include support for formal tax courses appropriate to your current experience and education.

If you’re the one we’re looking for, you’ll bring to the role:

  • Good conceptual and technical understanding of Canadian and/or US tax

  • Positivity and strong interpersonal abilities, analytical skills, and attention to detail

  • The ability to work individually and with a team to prioritize and complete assigned tasks within tight deadlines

  • The ability to be proactive in identifying ways to increase efficiencies in how work is performed

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with the Tax team, the asset teams and with external advisors

  • Desire to be challenged and grow your tax career on the job and with continued formal education

Nice to have:

  • US and/or international tax experience

  • Experience with tax compliance or mergers and acquisitions

  • CPA Canada In-Depth Tax Certificate or other equivalent tax-focused training

DAY-TO-DAY

Your day will change depending on what’s priority, but could include the following:

  • Assisting the Tax team, while working closely with BCI’s Finance department and its various asset teams and external tax advisors, in the facilitation and completion of all BCI Canadian and international tax filings, including, but not limited to: income tax, GST/HST, VAT, PST, withholding tax certification, FATCA, self-certification, CRS and other tax related calculations, documents and filings

  • Preparing information required for BCI’s tax related financial statement items and controls in accordance with policies and established standards

  • Assisting with tax related audits and revenue authority notices

  • Assisting with the maintenance of BCI’s tax SharePoint sites, including organizing documents/folders and participating in the testing of new features

  • Taking part in various projects within the team and across BCI, which require tax input, such as technology upgrades and new process implementation

  • Supporting the review and execution of investments, including preparing and managing structure charts, co-ordinating and reviewing due diligence and structuring memoranda, drafting internal investment tax documentation, reviewing external documents linked to fund and direct investments

  • Assisting with asset management deliverables, such as deferred tax liability calculations

  • Guiding and supporting junior staff and maintaining internal and external advisor relationships

  • Ensuring that all tax deliverables are consistent with BCI’s tax strategy and its risk management policies

WHERE YOU WILL WORK

Work from our downtown Victoria office; relocation support is available if needed.

SALARY RANGE
