Senior Engineer Mechanical Design

Obsidian Solutions Group (OSG) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Engineer specializing in Mechanical Design to join our team. This role involves a balanced focus on mechanical design and supporting applications for grants and Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) opportunities. The successful candidate will play a critical role in developing innovative solutions for US government problem statements and contributing to the growth and success of our projects.

Specific Responsibilities

• Mechanical Design (50%): 
• Develop concept design alternatives to address problem statements from the US government, as communicated through SBIR briefs and other grant opportunities. 
• Support aggressive design and development schedules by designing mechanical components for testing and evaluation. 
• Prepare comprehensive design documentation, including detailed mechanical part and assembly drawings with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) notation per ASME Y14.5 standards. 
• Procure or fabricate mechanical parts and assemblies as required to support project activities. 
• Utilize 3D CAD software (such as SolidWorks, Fusion360, Siemens NX) for creating and refining designs. 
• Conduct fundamental sizing and performance analysis using first-order hand calculations. 
• Perform structural analysis and optimization using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools like ANSYS, COMSOL, or Simcenter. 
• Design for various 3D printing processes, including Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), Stereolithography (SLA), and Selective Laser Sintering (SLS). 
• Support for Grants and SBIR Opportunities (50%): 
• Prepare technical reports to support new business activities, including grant writing and project documentation. 
• Create and maintain project timelines and schedules to ensure timely completion of project milestones. 
• Engage in technical writing to support intellectual property (IP) disclosures and other project-related documentation. in a fast-paced environment on multiple projects and have a strong attention for detail.

Requirements

• Proven ability to create, evaluate, and select concept designs effectively. 
• Proficiency in 3D CAD software, such as SolidWorks, Fusion360, or Siemens NX. 
• Experience with fundamental sizing and performance analysis using first-order hand calculations. 
• Expertise in structural analysis and optimization using FEA tools such as ANSYS, COMSOL, or Simcenter. 
• Familiarity with design processes for 3D printing technologies including FDM, SLA, and SLS. 
• Strong technical writing skills to support grant applications, project documentation, and IP disclosures. 
• Excellent organizational skills to create and maintain project timelines and schedules. 

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field (Master’s degree preferred). 
• Minimum of 10 years of experience in mechanical design engineering or a related role. 
• Demonstrated experience in preparing design documentation and technical reports. 
• Experience supporting grant applications and SBIR opportunities is highly desirable.
