General Surgery Physician Assistant (PA)

The General Surgery Physician Assistant (PA) provides high-quality surgical and clinical care in a rural hospital and outpatient clinic setting. This role supports general surgeons in the operating room, provides perioperative and postoperative management, and offers independent and collaborative care in the clinic, emergency department, and inpatient units. The PA plays a key role in expanding access to surgical services for the community.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical & Surgical Care
- Assist general surgeons in the operating room, including first assist duties for a wide range of general surgical procedures (e.g., robotic surgery, laparoscopic surgery, open surgery, appendectomy, cholecystectomy, hernia repair, wound care, breast surgery, colon surgery, endocrine surgery, endoscopy support).
- Triage patients through preoperative evaluations, obtain histories, conduct physical examinations, and order appropriate diagnostic testing
- Provide postoperative management including rounding on inpatients, wound assessment, drain management, pain control, and discharge planning.
- Conduct independent and collaborative clinic visits for new consultations, postoperative follow-up, and urgent surgical concerns.
Hospital Care
- Assess admitted patients for ongoing management in collaboration with the surgeon and medical staff.
- Respond to assist in surgery emergencies
Other Duties/Responsibilities assigned based on training & credentialing
- Drain removal
- Small lesion/lump and bump removal
- Wound debridement and closure
- I&D of abscesses
- Suture and staple removal
- Assist and/or support bedside procedures
- Evaluation and management of skin and soft tissue conditions
- Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies
- Wisconsin Physician Assistant License (or ability to obtain prior to start date)
- Certified by the NCCPA
- Current BLS Card (American Heart Association or American Red Cross for Providers) and ACLS
- DEA registration and prescriptive authority per state guidelines
- Surgical experience strongly preferred; consideration may be extended to new graduates with surgical rotations
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a small-team rural environment.
- Strong communication, clinical judgment, and patient-centered approach.
