Title

Pathologist Assistant

Under general supervision and in accordance with the policies, procedures and guidelines established within the organization and unit, accessions pathology specimens. Obtains patient clinical history to correlate with tissues. Describes gross anatomic features, dissection surgical specimens, frozen sections, and prepares tissue for histologic processing. Performs report filing. Maintains equipment, supplies and cleanliness of pathology grossing and accessioning areas and autopsy room. Performs autopsies under the direction and supervision of the pathologist. Acts as coordinator of the operational aspects of research tissue recovery. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.

Minimum Bachelor of Science with
completion of an accredited
Pathologist’s Assistant Program

• Must be able to operate and perform computer programs associated with documentation and record keeping in the department including the anatomic pathology computer and patient information systems
• Must have good verbal skills to report and discuss findings as needed with physicians, other hospital personnel, and research operations
• Must have courtesy, tact, and good customer service orientation
Work which produces high levels of mental/visual fatigue, e.g., interactive and repetitive or small detailed work requiring alertness and concentration for sustained periods of time, the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT between 40 and 70 percent of the time.
Involves considerable standing or walking, regular lifting of light-weight objects (i.e., 20 pounds or less) and assisting with heavier tasks such as assisting in lifting and moving patients. Minor straining or fatiguing positions must be assumed, and some fatiguing physical motions are required.
• Evaluates the quality of specimens received using a wide range of knowledge and experience.
• Interprets commercial research tissue and data requirements and implement standardized tissue procurement protocols.
• Acts as the coordinator for
• Prepares sections of tissue for immediate examination, using rapid tissue processing and frozen section technique to freeze, cut, mount and stain tissue specimen received from surgery.
• Operates computerized laboratory equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate with wax, tissue specimens to be preserved for study by Pathologist.
• Performs tissue grossing by describing and dictating gross anatomic features, dissection surgical specimens, frozen sections, and preparing tissue for histologic processing.
• Performs autopsies under the direction and supervision of Pathologist.
• Maintains appropriate records of work performed and is required to enter all pertinent information into the anatomic computer.
• Maintains the equipment, supplies and cleanliness of pathology grossing and accessioning areas and autopsy room.
• Maintains and upgrades his/her competencies through reading, attending teleconferences, workshops and other available continuing education programs appropriate to the advances in anatomic pathology.
• Assists in teaching/orientating new employees to the department.
