Actuarial Sr. Consultant – ALM Remote

The Asset Liability Management (ALM) team at Nationwide Financial (NF) aims to maximize earnings and enhance the value delivered from NF’s investments while mitigating excessive financial market risks. This mission directly impacts business growth, member value, and the financial strength of the enterprise.

Key Responsibilities

This position will support the fulfillment of ALM's key responsibilities, including:

  • Investment Strategy Development: Develop, test, and analyze new investment strategies and related modeling assumptions for NF’s $100B+ general account investment portfolios.

  • Portfolio Risk Management: Monitor and manage portfolio risks, including performing and analyzing liquidity stress tests.

  • Cash and Liquidity Management: Monitor and analyze NF’s operational and investment cash flows, and support Nationwide’s Spread-Lending and Funding Agreement programs.

  • Surplus Income Enhancement: Evaluate fixed income hedging solutions to minimize risk and drive optimal investment performance.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with Actuarial, Office of Investments, NF Business Development, ERM, Treasury, NF Finance and Controllership teams to consider business needs, capital usage, risk impacts, and asset market opportunities and constraints.

  • ALM Modeling: Develop ALM models and assumptions using ALFA and/or AXIS.

  • Reporting and Analytics: Develop risk analytics and reports using visualization and other tools, and present findings to business partners, Investments, PRC, and others.

  • Project Leadership: Provide ALM project leadership, overseeing contributions from various stakeholders across Nationwide.

Typical Skills and Experiences

Preferred Experience/Skills

  • Actuarial Principles: Knowledge of actuarial principles, diverse life and annuity products, fixed income investments, stochastic modeling, risk management, and the financial services industry.

  • Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Communication and Collaboration: Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively across functions.

  • Innovation: Curious and innovative; willing to challenge assumptions and develop creative solutions to actuarial and business problems.

  • Technical Proficiency: Experience with ALFA and/or AXIS actuarial software, and aptitude for diverse technologies such as SQL, Databricks, Power BI, Tableau, Python, etc.

  • Microsoft Office: Proficiency in Microsoft Teams & Office suite.

  • Leadership Skills: Leadership skills, competencies, and experiences may take precedence over applied technical experience.

  • Relevant Experience: 5+ years of relevant experience.

Education/Certification/Licenses

  • Degree: Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Finance, or a similar field preffered.

  • Certifications: ASA required; Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) is strongly preferred. Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst (CERA), Certificate in Quantitative Finance (CQF), or similar credentials are beneficial but not required.

This position will be staffed at the G5 internal pay band.  This role can be fully remote.
