The Senior Accountant of Indirect Tax reports directly to the Manager of Indirect Taxes. This role supports all aspects of indirect tax compliance here at Shake Shack, including sales and use tax, personal property tax, and beer and liquor tax, and gross receipts tax. Responsibilities include preparation, review, and acting as a liaison for tax filings, assisting with taxing authority examinations, conducting research projects, and ensuring timely completion of all filing requirements.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Indirect Tax Compliance:
Preparation and filing of all indirect tax returns, including sales and use tax, personal property tax, beer and liquor taxes, commercial rent tax, and gross receipts tax
Liaise with outside tax advisors regarding personal property tax requirements (i.e., provide them with the information needed to complete personal property tax returns)
Support the forecast of personal property taxes
Reconciling various sales tax reports with monthly sales data and general ledger
Prepare journal entries and reconciliation related to indirect taxes such as sales and use and property tax
Review and analyze fixed asset purchases to ensure accurate treatment for use tax and property tax compliance
Investigate and resolve tax notices received
Indirect Tax Registration Set-Up / Tax Rate and Matrix Maintenance:
Ensure appropriate registrations and initial internal set-up is performed (i.e., applying for EINS, obtaining sales tax certificates, configuring the POS system, etc.)
Monitor changes in sales tax rates to ensure updated rates are communicated, implemented appropriately, and validated
Assist in researching, documenting, and maintaining the tax matrix of all tax filing regulations
Other:
Assist team with state and local tax audits by gathering, organizing, and tracking information requested by auditors.
