Job Duties

This Chief Deputy (Grade 13) position is assigned managerial, operational and administrative responsibilities. Will monitor all court procedures to provide high quality customer service, assure compliance with applicable law and meet the needs of the court and outside agencies. In addition, this position is responsible for assisting Judges, Attorneys and all parties, in a case, both on the phone and in person with tact and courtesy. This position must ensure court instructions are executed correctly, and legal papers are prepared with accuracy and in accordance with appropriate policies. This position is assigned docketing and operational responsibilities in a high-volume office with frequent and critical deadlines, entering data into an automated Case Management System, scheduling matters for court and preparing legal documents.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
This position will be directly responsible for the supervision and direction of all post court team activities to include training of staff, docket review for accuracy and accountability for all cases and to ensure compliance with court policies and procedures. The Chief Deputy monitors the quality and quantity of work being performed by the post court team through direct observation. With the Clerk of Court, this Chief Deputy will assist with performance evaluations, interview panels, grievances and disciplinary actions, projects, implementing procedures/policies, attend meetings, and consult with the clerk regarding all personnel. This position will assist the Accounting Clerk in FAS reports and assists in the audit each year performed by the APA. Assumes additional responsibilities other than those primarily assigned to the position as required by the Clerk of Court. Other duties are assigned based on the court’s requirements. The selected individual must possess Virginia Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court experience and have a minimum of 5 years in court experience; the ability to professionally interact with diverse customers from attorneys, law enforcement, and various agency staff to the general public; give clear and concise direction to staff; will manage competing priorities; should be detailed oriented with multitasking skills; and possess exceptional verbal and written communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent required. Most competitive applicants will have considerable court experience/knowledge of the criminal justice system. Applicants should be highly organized and possess significant knowledge, skills, and abilities in personnel management, time management, and performance management. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and advanced knowledge of office automation systems and Microsoft programs. Must have reliable attendance and be able to multitask and maintain a positive attitude.

Additional Considerations

Experience in money handling and the ability to type 50 wpm preferred.
