Job Description
The Data Editor will collaborate with the investigative units across NBCUniversal Local on data driven stories, for both television and digital distribution.
Responsibilities:
- Collect, build and assemble large data sets to make them searchable internally to identify stories, trends and for publishing on our digital platforms.
- Organize, clean and analyze complicated data for current investigations, working directly with reporters and producers on executing complicated queries.
- Perform data conversion from one form to another such as raw PDF and making it searchable and sortable.
- Acquire public records databases and analyze for enterprise stories that can be produced across multiple stations covering such areas as government, education, health care and law enforcement. This can include writing a national story for the group’s digital platforms.
- Work with our data visualization specialist in mapping data, making info graphics and interactives from datasets.
- Conduct periodic computer assisted reporting training and coaching for journalists across the group.
Qualifications
Qualifications/Requirements:
- 3+ years of computer assisted reporting experience in a commercial television station, newspaper or online news organization.
- Undergraduate degree in journalism, computer science or related course of study preferred
- Understand GIS basics, data visualization and have a command of Microsoft Excel and MySQL
- Strong preference given to candidates with journalism experience using statistics, regression analysis and probability models, with corresponding knowledge of applicable software like R, Python and Tableau.
- Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
