HVAC / General Maintenance Technician - Full Time

While the Indianapolis Zoo is known for employing people who care for our animals, we also employ mechanics, plumbers, electricians, and maintenance technicians who work in our Facilities department. Behind the scenes, our Facilities department works to keep our mechanical, building, and plumbing needs serviced and running smoothly. Working in Facilities at the Indianapolis Zoo presents interesting challenges and a great working environment for professional skilled trades workers. We are currently searching for an HVAC Technician to join our team!

Ideal candidates are committed to advancing the Zoo's mission to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world. The successful candidate will have a general maintenance background with a minimum of five (5) years' experience in the HVAC field. Extensive skills in HVAC systems are a must. This position will require performing general maintenance duties as assigned along with assisting the Facilities department in proper maintenance of the Zoo's equipment and structures. High school diploma or equivalent is required. HVAC certification or relevant vocational/ trade school certification/ degree is a plus!

Due to the nature of this role, this full-time, 40 hours per week position is on-call 24 hours a day and will work evening, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required, though we do try to have consistent scheduled days off. Flexibility in scheduled hours is a must. Must also possess a valid Indiana driver's license and have a driving record insurable by the Zoo's insurance.

Position Requirements and Experience (Note: there are strenuous physical requirements to this position including but not limited to):

• Responsible for maintaining all HVAC equipment and controls on the entire Society site.
• Maintains, replaces, and/or repairs the equipment of the Society and its buildings per manufacturer specifications.
• Have a working knowledge of HVAC systems and refrigeration systems.
• General maintenance responsibilities include but are not limited to electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems.
• Presents professional attitude and interpersonal skills.
• Exposure to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, including inclement weather, cold and hot temperatures, and humidity.
• Ability to detect, assess, identify, and observe surroundings to make sound judgments, along with the ability to communicate verbally, and comprehend and decipher information accurately using a telephone and two-way radio.
• Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting at least 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds constantly to transport objects.
• Ability to transport and move items, exerting at least 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently.
• Ability to ascend/descend ladders, steps, and uneven terrain while maintaining body equilibrium to perform various jobs.
• Must be able to safely operate department tools and manual transmission vehicles.
• Adheres to all safety policies and wears proper safety equipment (PPE) including dust masks, respirators, goggles, hearing protectors, and safety harnesses.
• Must have and maintain a valid Indiana driver's license (or obtain one within thirty (30) days of hire date) insurable by the Zoo's insurance.
